Diamond chain part number & source.
« on: March 14, 2009, 08:30:16 PM »
I've recently received several requests from y'all about "where can I find the Diamond chain you talk about?".

So, I bought some, and know they can be had, from Kaman Industrial Supply. If you can't get an account yourself at your local Kaman dealer, let's get a list together and I'll see if I can make a quantity buy from my alma mater's shop: they let me do things like that, still.

The Diamond part number is: XMC-1548-M-102P for a 102-link chain.

Be forewarned: I paid almost $100 each for these chains, and I consider them the best you can run on the 750, in particular. (No, I don't wish this to become a "chain thread", please...) It is made to cope with the vagaries of the alignments that come on this frame system, and run very quietly on the oversized base circle of Honda's sprockets, a perfect marriage. I have personally run these chains as much as 38,000 miles, then retained them as my backup chains, because they only stretched 1.5% at that distance. I normally replace my chain at 1% stretch, 'cuz I'm picky...

You can install this chain directly, or cut off one link to make it the OEM style 100 links as found on the K0-K4 with 17/48 or 18/48 sprockets. I usually install the 102 length, so that the chain adjuster marks start at the first "notch" in the back (otherwise, it ends up ahead of the notches).
See SOHC4shop@gmail.com for info about the gadgets I make for these bikes.

HondaMan is gracious enough to steer us in the right direction, so I thought I'd "link" us to a possible place to get the "good stuff".  All punning aside, I'm not sure if this is a legit deal (sounds fantastic) but if anyone buys one here, please report back your experience with this vendor.

The model number HondaMan talks about is XMC-1548-M-102P.  This site has it for $42.91 plus about $10.00 shipping.

I think I'll name this issue "can o' worms".

First, you don't need an o-ring.  To remain compatible with what you have, you do need a 630.  You can possibly convert to 530 (chain we're talkin' about here).  That would require you get through the quagmire of changing your front sprocket "type" (and rear as well).  This issue has come up a few times and is talked about here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=37174.msg384249#msg384249

I would love to do the same thing but I'm also interested in accomplishing 2 other things at the same time and I'm having a difficult time.  I want to use Honda sprockets - this 530 sprocket that would fit on a 77/78 engine may not exist but pre-77 sprockets may work with shimming.  The second thing I want to do is have a "low gear" setup.  I really would like to get a 17/48 combo or a 15/43.  I've found aftermarket 530 front sprockets that fit the 77/78 setup (see link above for explanation of how they're different) but can find only an 18 and it's not Honda.  Sheesh.  I think that shimming and using Honda pre-77 sprockets is the answer but so far have not been able to find a Honda 17.

I want to know if that deal is legit...!

I do too.  That link contains a phone number.  I'll be calling them tomorrow.

I have a brand new set (about 100 miles) I'll sell you :) :)  The reason I'd be selling is to use the chain mentioned above and go Honda on both sprockets (you should do both).

Just went through my receipts and dug up my chain and sprockets. The chain was purchased at Road Rider in San Jose,Ca. on 6-18-05. It was $73.95 and shows a part # 120201 (probably their # , not Diamond) but it does say Diamond 530XDL  102L. My rear sprocket was purchased from Dennis Kirk on 6-7 -05 and is a Sunstar 43 tooth (I wanted lower RPM on the highway). It was $38.99. I remember they didn't have the counter sprocket so I got it from Honda on 6-20-05. OEM stock 18 tooth for $29.95 (It was quicker to get it there than to wait for Dennis Kirk to restock.)
I do notice one thing though that Hondaman mentioned....I could have removed another link....possibly 2 as my wheel adjuster is a bit past the middle of travel. I will say this....for a non-Oring chain....this sucker doesn't stretch like other ,cheaper chains I have run in the past and I sure don't baby it!!!

GammaFlat,
You say you have a 17tooth front sprocket and 48 rear that will fit my 76cb750k ?
How much and what is the brand of sprockets?
Your just selling it because You want the OEM honda sprockets for yours?
Why wouldn't you be able to use the chain listed above on these sprockets?
Thanks alot

My setup is on a K6 (17/48 and new chain - 530).  (Don't let me confuse things... I also have a K7 and K8 which are 630 setups)  The front sprocket is a new Sunstar and I don't know about the rear (but can find out - it actually might be a non-new sprocket - I remember it being a close call and my local motorcycle shop guy was trying to talk me out of putting a new one on but I think I "won" and gave him money for a new one - ;)).  I believe the chain is DID.  Honestly, if I were you, I'd get the chain and sprockets HondaMan recommends.

You probably haven't heard the whole story (yet), but you'll pick up horsepower to the ground (or efficiency if you prefer) and longevity doing that (the above chain and Honda sprockets).  Okay, there I've said it and now this will turn into the equivalent of an "oil" thread.  :)

If the above chain is truly only 42 bucks plus 10 shipping, do that.  If you find a "Honda brand" 17 sprocket, please let me know what the part number is.

If you're serious about my "slightly used" chain, I'll be happy to work something out with you (gotta find out if the above is the real deal first).  We can work out a deal for the sprockets as well (I'm going Honda sprockets in that case).  Lemme research and I'll PM you (probably tomorrow) when I find out what's what.

*** Update *** Here's the HONDA 48 tooth rear sprocket (530) and 18 front from Babbits:
SKU: 41201-300-870
SPROCKET, FINAL DRIVEN (48T) (Honda Code 0236083)    1    $71.85 (OUCH!)
SKU: 23801-300-620
SPROCKET, DRIVE (18T) (Honda Code 0236463)    1    $35.06
Still need the 17 tooth front 530 sprocket.. anyone.. Beuhler?

*** Update 2 ***
SKU: 23801-300-010
SPROCKET, DRIVE (17T) (Honda Code 0256552)    1    $30.14 (this is a from a '76 F)

I just spoke to KSC Direct and their price and product number are correct and quantity discounts are available.  If you order 4 or more, they can be drop-shipped (direct from Diamond).  Qty 10 will get you down to 38.06 before shipping.

Here's the link (same as above): http://kscdirect.com/item/DIA%2BXMC-1548-M-102P/DIAMOND%2BCHAIN%2BCOMPANY_-%250A

I ordered from Pat at X405 for 42.21 + 9.70 (shipping) - you can also order online.  They do have a store in Denver and Omaha, NE and others where one could save $10-ish on shipping: 7499 E. 41st Ave, Denver  303-316-4614.

That's the one! It used to be called the "XL" in the 1980s, then the "XDL" in the 1990s. Now they call it the Powersport or Motorsport, but it's the same one.

I called Precision Industries, a national industrial equipment firm and ordered a 100 link, nickel plated, size 530, O ring chain, came to me by UPS a few days later, $110 with shipping.

The Diamond chain website will find a local dealer. I found the industrial equipment people about 25% cheaper then the motorcycle parts people. Just counted links in the chain that came on the bike.  Might have been better at 102 links.

Sprockets from JT Sprockets 17/48, found a dealer online.

Smooth running and shiny!

I did not buy it yet but I'll be trying to source it at babbits or another "Honda" parts dealer.... maybe my local Yammy/Honda joint.  My poor K6 is in pieces and the weather is getting nice -CRAP!!  Not only that but I just landed a K0 engine that might find it's way into the K6 frame  ::)

I'll report back to this thread when I find it.  As mentioned elsewhere in this thread, yes it is a '76 "F" sprocket and yes, I believe it will work.  I'll be sure to let you know if it doesn't.  I believe 76 and prior were 530s.  (Somebody help me here if I'm wrong.)

Ok,one  more question.  I have a 78 cb750K bike but I have put a 76 cb750k motor in the bike. So I have a 530 chain ,but I still have the 1978 cb750k swingarm on the bike.So my question is:
I ordered a diamond 102 link 530 chain because that is what a
76 cb750k calls for,is that going to be to short due to the 78 swingarm being longer? I have heard that you need 104 or 105 links for the 78 drive chain?Hopefully the 102 link will work otherwise I’ll be returning it ,unless someone here wants to give me what I have paid for it?
thanks
