Can anyone identify a newbies model from his serial number?
« on: March 15, 2009, 12:46:02 PM »
Hey there all,

I'm a newbie here, approaching my new (first) project with some trepidation, and am trying to confirm the model bike I have and find out where I can get some relevant reference material.

The serial number is SC01-4009361, and its a Y registration plate here in England, which I understand is 1982-1983. From what I can gather, these two bits of info indicate its a CB750SC. Yet I also have read something that seems to indicate that model was introduced in the US only. Can anyone help me confirm any of this? And what is the difference between the SC and the previous models?

Thanks in advance fellas

That would be a dohc if it is an 82 or 83. I wouldn't have a clue.
You might find some help in other bike section.

Keep digging noobie, there maybe a Kawasaki 1000 in there somewhere! ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

BritBro...!,
You are the proud owner of a 1982, CB900F Super Sport !, according to that engine no.
4into 2 exhaust, silver or black ?, was only produced '81 and '82.
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

Thanks fellas for your replies. Excuse my ignorance, like I say, totally green to this, been riding ten years but never really got my hands dirty, this is my first project.

Spanner 1 - its a four into one, silver and white. So that was the engine number not the serial number? That explains a few things. From the back of the Haynes manual using that engine number it looks like its an '82 CB900 F2-B.

Any one got any comments on these engines?
And it being a DOHC, am I still welcome to post here?

Finally, any thought: cant find any pistons, cylinders dont look scarred, what sort of problem do you think could have prompted the previous owner to tear it down and result in missing pistons but no cylinder probs?

I beleive that these engines suffered from similar cam chain woes as do the sohc engines.

It was probably stripped down because it rattled - never put back together and bits lost (?)

Maybe they installed the uber-rare flux-capacitor engine mod.  You need to shove rotten bananas and other fruit into the cylinders to fuel the system.  The acid from the fruit keeps the cylinders nice and smooth :)

You guys have the flux capacitor confused with the Mr. Fusion.

1.21gigawatts produced by Mr. Fusion allowed the Flux capacitor to transport a Delorean through time.

Just saying

I tried to buy a CB900F last year, rode a few, all more $$ then I would pay.  Mostly due to my education on my 750 via this forum, I knew what leaking carbs and missing engines take to fix.

I am happy with the cb900, only paid £100 for it as its a real basket case, wanted a real long term project so I'll be sure to get a real education doing it. Not planning on restoring it to its original state, looking to customise it, including different carbs, but from what I can gather it sounds a good engine. Will get it to produce 1.21 gigawatts one day. Probably around the same time they release hoverboards for general sale.

Whats this cam chain issue all about? Bear in mind I know less than nothing about anything.
