Would you reuse a not so perfect cam sproket?
« on: March 16, 2009, 07:21:48 AM »
So in my CB550 rebuild I got the cam out and noticed that the sprocket has some nicks and chips in the flat side part of it.  The teeth are perfect as is the inside.  Would you reuse a imperfect cam sprocket if the teeth are still prefect?

Also where can I get a new one if you guys think it is not reusable?

The sprocket (pn 14321-323-000) is no longer available from Honda.  If the teeth are in good shape and there are no cracks, I would reuse it.
Otherwise, I'd check the after market manufacturers to see if anyone is making camshafts for the 1975 CB550K.

I know there are several makers of camshafts, but I don't believe I have seen aftermarket cam sprockets.   :(

Jay @ APE has adjustable cam sprockets for 750.

 Does anyone on here know, if 750 & 500 & 550 interchange?

Well after looking at some parts micro fiche, looks like the CB500K,F and the CB550K,F have the same number and look of the cam sprocket.  The 750s, 650s, and 450, are all different.   :-\

If the teeth are good, go with it.

How about posting a picture?

Now looking at some pictures off ebay, I see the teeth count are the same for many vintage honda sprockets = 34 teeth.  The look of the 350 sprockets is similar???  I know there are adjustable 350 sprockets out there too.

Somewhere here there is a thing you put a part number in and it spits out all the bikes that used that part number..  very cool...

The teeth might be the same, but looking at the picture there is an offset in your gear, and the 750k, and f cams both have no offset.

That may not be an offset, I've seen OEM cam sprockets that had rubber material of some sort bonded on both sides, perhaps to quiet the cam chain as it rides over the teeth?  That's what it looks like to me.

I haven't seen that, but if that's the case then the rubber is chipped and I would probably just use the thing. Maybe remove the rubber that is coming apart first so it didn't clog any oil passages.

I have a spare sprocket that had crunchy rubber....

it strips off easy enough.

better than finding it all in the screen later.
