CB750 engine disassembly question... sort of
« on: March 15, 2009, 04:57:07 PM »
Okay, little bit of the story first. My bike's a 72 Honda cb750. Had to put it in the shop (please hold all "why didn't you do it yourself?" comments) last week. So my garage has become kind of lonely and I got an itch to work on something. Amongst my Spare parts bin, I spotted a nasty, crudded up valve cover. So with various wire wheels and cleaners, I made it pretty again. The bike still wasn't back, so then I taped of the ohv750 raised letters and shot it with some high temp flat black. As I was looking at it I decided that it needed some brushed tappets, so I cleaned and brushed up a set and put them on there for a visual (my current tappets are painted the high temp flat black). It looks so badass! I want to put it on my bike when it gets back. I mean I really want it on there, it's perfect.
So my question is: Can I remove the valve cover on my bike without pulling the motor? If the bike were back, I'd just give it a go, but it looks like I'll be getting her back sometime this week.
I know that the depth of knowledge and experience with these bikes on this board is immense, and I'm a bit of a newb as this is my first honda sohc/4 and my first vintage bike as well. So thanks in advance guys,
Alex

Bummer... total waste of time then...
So as a side note: Does anyone wanna buy a badass black, well prepped valve cover?  ;D I'll post pics if there's any interest.

If you love the looks of it that much, you could install it in one weekend I'd think.  One day to pop the motor out, mount the valve cover that night, motor back in the next day.  If you've got a spare pair of hands to assist you it should go pretty quick.

+1 on removing the motor - actually very easy - just a matter of taking things off and putting them back on after engine has been reinstalled...of course need a few things like new exhaust gaskets but nothing too hard about it.

Just curious but why was your bike in the shop? Carbs? Nothing wrong with putting it in the shop but sooner or later you are going to have to work on your bike (especially as you have a garage)...otherwise it might get expensive...that and you will discover a whole new way of looking at your bike knowing you have got it running so well. Ask questions here, get advice, get your hands dirty...it will feel good in the end  ;)

Had to have some valve work done. It's my plan to figure that stuff out next winter, since riding season is here, I wanted it done quickly and correctly... alas, it didn't quite work out that way, at least for the quick part. Anyway, I think I'm going to remove my engine when I get it back... which goes against my whole send it off thing, but I'm feelin slightly more confident.
I also need to repaint my frame, so that'd be an excellent time for that, too. And then I could put my "new-to-me" cb900f shocks on her too. Wow... I'll let y'all know how it goes.

Ok gotcha. I know what you mean about riding versus wrenching. Careful with those CB900F shocks. If its the 14` variety you will be adding an extra inch to the back end. If all else is left as-is, and shocks are on stiffest setting you might find handling is adversely affected, like po-go-ing down the road.

good luck with it,

cheers

Had to have some valve work done.

Is the shop doing more than adjusting valve clearance to specs?  Although that can be done without removing the motor, any other extensive valve work would require engine removal.  If they already have the engine out, and the valve cover off, maybe you could just drop off your "nice" cover and have them put it on instead of the old one.  Better hurry before they put motor back in.

The dude's supposed to call me if the motor comes out, in which case I'll definately get the cover to him!
