who knows what I have? 550f? k?
« on: October 17, 2005, 11:17:38 AM »
first of all I am new to working on these older bikes.  mostly 90's and newer inline 4's.  so I have  a question.
I do not have the vin right off the top of my head but I am looking to see what type of  550 I have.  It was stamped 8/ 1973.  If anyones knows who I can contact to find out that would be great.  is there a good reference books to read to see what goes with what?  I just do not want to buy a carb rebuild kit or gasket kit etc. and not have it be the right 550 kit.
thanks in advance

A bike built in Japan in August 73 is probably a 74 model CB550 K0.  These would have carbs with an 022A setup.
That is, if you are certain it is a CB550.

There is some possibility (from the date alone) it might be a 73 CB500 K3.  These carbs would look the same, but have an internal set up of 627B to provide for the lower displacement.

The vin number would tell a great deal.

We are talking US models aren't we?

Yes, yes, you're right.   Mr. Clumsy Fingers here typed 3 instead of 2.  S/b 73Cb500 K2
Can't proof read my own stuff very well either....

At any rate, given the current information he probably has a 74 CB550 K0 with 022A carbs.
