How limited would I be with a CB350G?
« on: March 17, 2009, 10:19:52 PM »
There's one for sale locally, it's smaller than I was looking for, but I've seen some cafe conversions that I really like. My only concern is that it isn't up to the task of freeway riding...I'm not planning on going cross-country, but I would like something that'd be able to get up to 65-70mph without too much flogging...is the 350 twin basically stuck in town in this regard? I'm only 150lbs, but still...

I used to cruise at 70 with a 305 Honda back in 68 through 71.  It would go 95-98 in a tuck.... which I did frequently.  It would go close to 95 with two on in a tuck, but neither one of us were over 150lbs.  I don't have direct experience with the 350, but would expect it to be at least as fast.

I'll bet it's faster than a 350/4 or 400/4

I got my first CB350G at 15 in 1973. Back then the speed limit was 70 and I used to go everywhere. We'd tell our parents we were going camping and head to Panama City. I had it 8 months and put 18,000 miles on it before I totalled it on Miracle Strip passing cars on the right side :(.

Anyway, I weighed 165 back then and would ride 2-up at 70 mph for hours on end. Mind you, it's 7,000 rpm with stock gearing (tach and speedo are exactly the same in 5th gear), but they are super tough. I have it's replacement today and I'm 240 and still love riding it on nice afternoons.

One last thing - did you realize that is a 1 year only bike? It's paint, it's disc brake, it's instrument lighting, and gauges are all a 1-year only model. The best and last year of the CB350 twins. Don't chop it up. They are a piece of history.

Gordon

Oops.

Thought you meant the CB350SG from the '80s:

Here's a bit on the 350G (my Brother-In-Law had one back then and it was a pretty metallic Green)

The CB350G Super Sport 350 was sold in 1973 in one of three colors: Candy Orange, Tyrolean Green Metallic or Iris Purple Metallic. The gas tank stripes were white and black. The bike featured hydraulic front disc brakes. The front fork covers were chrome and the fork boots were black. The lower fork legs were polished aluminum. The engine was a 325cc OHC parallel twin with two CV carburetors. The transmission was a 5-speed. The serial number begins CB350-5000001.

Thanks for that, Bill!

Orange or green, I could live with.

Happy trails.

Someday I'm gonna have me a purple 350, purely for the novelty of owning a purple motorcycle.
