Greenspun archives.. are they gone forever?
« on: October 18, 2005, 08:39:44 AM »
I was trying to find an old post I made on there a LONG time ago about trying to find information about my bike... on the thread I posted the VIN# of my bike to use to identify what year it was.. I have someone looking into getting the VIN checked out for me to see if it isn't stolen so I can attempt to get a title for it.. he needed to get the VIN # off of me again because he was going to have someone else attempt to lookup the information on the bike but I can't find the greenspun forums thread that I had it listed in and the bike is at a friends house.. is the greenspun archives gone?

Alright...now that's just down right foolish!!! Leaving the bike at an Ex's?!?!?!? One of two things are likely happen...either gasoline and a match or it will be "loaned" to a friend (I didn't think if you'd mind if I loaned it to Thor...the 6'5" Tae Kwon Do instructor she's now banging...)

Either way I smell trouble...

Well you'd have to hear the whole story  ;D

A) Me and my Ex are still really close friends..
B) The bike ain't going anywhere!!!! it's a basketcase..
C) The bike is hers by right.. it was left on her property by the previous owner who said he never had the title but was going to restore it but lost interest and said we could do anything to it that we wanted.... My ex told me I could have it if I wanted it.... her dad wanted it.. LOL but she had alrady promised it to me.. now he keeps telling her to tell me to get the POS out of her barn.. LOL
D) She has no desire to restore it.. she can barely drive her truck, better yet a bike.. better yet a manual.. besides, her house is enough of a money pit!!!

here is a pic of the bike as it sits...

The rear wheel is the only thing that is rusted beyond use.. everything else has little to no rust and if the is any it is only surface rust.. chrome is almost 100% perfect.. it just has about 5-10 years of pollen all over it..

mylittleho,

When I saw those pics I was reminded. I had asked not too long ago if anyone had heard any more about your attempt to restore this bike since I looked like a real challange.

I found your orig. posting, I think, but no reference to a specific VIN# unless it was in another post. In any event, here is the post I found, there is a link within it to your Geocities photos.

I kept getting requests to delete posts on the greenspun forums but could no longer do so since the system has been disabled, so I asked the owner of greenspun.com to delete the SOHC/4 boards since we have all the messages archived at glennstauffer.com/smf.  I checked just now and the boards at greenspun.com are deleted.  You'll still find references to the messages in google searches; it'll take a while for them to vanish from there.

Hey Bob good to speak with you again.. I remember E-mailing back and forth to you about a year ago..

I lost interest for a bit.. rather things in my life kept me from persuing it any farther.. and now things are getting back to normal.. I gave a friend of mine the VIN about 2 months ago and his dad was supposed to check on it (state trooper).. but he ended up giving the VIN to someone else to look up and I am sure they gave it to someone else to look up and so forth.. so it didn't get very far... My friend is now going to try giving it to a retired public information officer he knows and see if he can't get anywhere with it..

I still have yet to cut the chain though.. and get the bike out of the barn.. I want to clean her up so bad and bring her back to my house.. unfortunately the bike is over 100' from the house and A) I don't have a 100' extension cord and B) I don't know how well a 6" side grinder would work on a 100' power cord anyways.. so it looks like I might be doing it with a hacksaw as I can't rotate it to find the removeable link.  ;D

I guess a hacksaw would work, but there is not much clearance to work one back and forth. There is a tool you can get, either J.C. Whitney, or whatever, for breaking the chain. Think of a modified "C" clamp with a little fixture to press the pin out of the link. They are relatively cheap even at a motorcycle shop, maybe $20-25 I think I paid for mine at the Honda dealer. Or, if you know someone with the tool, just borrow theirs, it takes about 2 minutes to split the chain.
