Sand in Tank 1971 CB500
« on: March 20, 2009, 07:37:09 PM »
I recently had someone sand blast my tank for me.  They managed to get quite a bit of sand into the tank.  Any tips or suggestions to get this out?  I have tried flooding the tank with water to wash it out, and tired blowing it out with air, but niether has worked to well.

I would try brake clean... lots of it.
you can get it by the gallon if you know someone at a dealership garage.
everything I say is pure speculation and
I have no idea what I'm talking about  ._.

Hmm, interesting one. How about a wet/dry vac. Now the hose for it is probably too large in diameter, but perhaps you could cobble together coupling a slightly thinner and more flexible hose to the end. Fill the tank with water again, slosh it around, but then let the sand settle to back end of the tank by tilting at an angle. Insert the hose all the way down and try to suck the sand out with the water. You might have to repeat this a few times.

Well, that's my wild dumb idea. I think I'm off to bed now. :-\

thanks for the ideas.  Will try them tomorrow.  It is almost riding season in Minnesota, want to finish of the rebuild on this thing and get some miles on it!  Found it in a garage, had been sitting for 12 years.  Flipping it from a cafe racer back to stock!

hmm, 12 years. both my bikes sat for 12 years, and 3 of my friends bought bikes that sat for the same amount of time.

Good to hear. I'm sure sand in the tank was a little worrisome.
