Topic: well, it turns out that the duplicolor paint i used isnt fuel resistant

i painted using the duplicolor paint shop system paints. when i went to add fuel today i got a small drip onto the tank. i immediately got a damp rag and wiped it off along with the clear and some of the color coat. this paint has been on the tank for at least 6 months so i know it was cured properly.

can you coat the tank with something over what you have already painted?

i'm hoping i can sand and prep the area and re-clear it

Sometimes it is a blush that can be compounded off. U need to let the paint reharden.

Mr Fuzzy, I think you need a gas resistant paint like Imron.  I wonder if you can get an Imron clear coat?  (I don't know- just brain storming)

uncle, thats what i'm thinking now, just strip the bastid back down and do it with a better quality paint. this way i can correct some bondo mistakes that didnt show till i had polished the clear. i just thought that since this stuff is sold as an automotive paint it might actually be fuel resistant. thats what i get for thinking i guess lol

weird thing is,i used the cheapest rattle can flat black paint on my tank,no clear coat.......... and fuel does nothing to it...!!!!!!!

the gas wasnt on the paint 5 seconds too, it was just instantaneous. oh, it's down to the primer

I think the enamel and polyurethane paints are more fuel resistant. I sprayed my lower cases with some hi temp enamel and leaky float caused a pool to form for a week and not a wrinkle in the paint.
