shipping an exhaust from So Cal to On Can
« on: March 21, 2009, 01:23:09 PM »
Yes, I searched, got lost in the results and things change over time so old posts don't apply.

I am looking at an exhaust, needs to come from Southern California up to Onario Canada. The seller has listed UPS Worldwide Express for $150 (air). I suggested UPS Standard to and from Canada (ground). Any suggestions on getting the cost down?

I would stay away from UPS, their brokerage fees are quite high. Can he just mail it through the USPS. That's probably the cheapest way.

Try USPS.
Also, when you know the weight, (believe it or not) try Greyhound.  They ship fron terminal to terminal, not to your door.  It works, though.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

dhl still does international shipping. despite horror stories i've heard about them, i've shipped many many times with them and the prices and service were excellent.

Well, it is POSSIBLE to avoid the UPS ripoff fees if you're in a reasonably large city. There has to be a Canada Customs office. The package can not be actually received at your door.
You have to pick it up at the UPS depot, you can refuse it at your door explaining you will pick it up (ask where!).
Go there the next day. Tell the counter person you want to handle the importation personally - he has to give you some paperwork (a commercial invoice).
Take the papers to the Canada Customs office. You will probably have to pay GST or HST on the declared value. Depending on counry of origin there may be customs duty as well. Then the papers get stamped and you take them back to the UPS depot, and trade them for your package.
In Toronto, if you can get the package delivered as "hold for pickup at YYZ UPS depot", this all takes maybe an hour if you're lucky since UPS is on the north side of the airport and CCRA is in the airfreight complex nearby.

Back when I was rebuilding my LBC I often had larger things (transmission, exhaust etc) shipped to a sportscar friend in Niagara Falls New York and then drove over the border to pick them up. Maybe there's an SOHC4 member there that you could convince to receive for you.

This is what I do, have a friend in NY state that receives my packages and I pick them up bring them across. Most often the folks at Canada Customs won't bother making paperwork for stuff under $100, and if it's over that and a US manufactured part there is tax only to pay.

Saves time & usually green too!

One other thing to remember, is to make sure the items in package are labeled "USED" motorcycle exhaust. I can't quite recall but I think it makes a difference.
A few year back I shipped a 4-1 header from Winnipeg. to Vancouver by Canada Post, I think it cost around $30. give or take.
The only time I've had to pay brokerage / border fee's is when I had to source a exterior oem mirror for the wifes vehicle from the USA. I could be wrong though.

USPS is the way to go.

Yes you can get a PO box. Theoretically you will have to pay duty as well because they are man'd in Japan, but as W'peg550guy said make sure the box is well marked as used, and tell customs exactly what they are.

List as used MC parts, or Used MC made in USA,, (regardless of where they are made)

USPS shipped can still  result in broker charges, you get nicked at least 1/2 the time. but the good part, its 5.00. ..IMO reasonable.

I have had at least 200 shipments, by USPS to Canada.

How far are you from the border? We are 90 miles, and often pick up bigger stuff on the US side. There is a freight forwarder we use there.. charges me 5 bux a day to hold it there, so got to get down fast. its a UPS dealer, and I have shipped bigger stuff  using them. on this big stuff I use UPS as it is not crossing the border & they take bigger packages.. like the Ducati single frame, I got for 5.00.. in beautiful shape.

Note on the Ducati frame: Its one of my favorite stories in NO RESERVE discussions.. the seller never listed a NO Reserve item after that again. :o
