Gas tank questions
« on: March 21, 2009, 03:50:40 PM »
I just got my 1980 cb 650 custom and the gas tank has a small leak on the bottom. I have began striping the paint on the outside so I can repaint and seal the hole. I also want to reseal the tank from the inside with KREEM. My question is on my petcock there is a little plastic tube and I was wondering if it the bike needs it to run? I am probably gogin to give the tank an acid bath and the plastic piece might get eaten.

If you are talking about the tube from the petcock going straight up inside the tank, that is for your reserve fuel setting. no you don't have to have it but with out it when you run out of gas you are out of gas with no reserve

If you use some worxs toilet bowl cleaner or some other acidic based cleaner with some bb's or a hand full of Penny's and and immediately spray with some WD-40 type spray you won't have to kreem your tank which IMO just leads to trouble later

If the holes if your tank are small like badly pitted plumbers solider works very well

+1, tube = need gas station within 20 miles...no tube = push bike 20 miles..i.e. no 20 mile warning !!!
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,

i havent completely finished stripping my tank but the way it looks it that I cant take the filter piece or whatever that little white plastic tube sticking out of the petcock on the tank is. Does the threaded part of the petcock somehow come off to clean, remove, or replace the filter?
