Installing petcock - teflon tape? Sealers?
« on: March 21, 2009, 02:42:32 PM »
Hey there,

Just getting around to putting some gas in my new to me 75 cb750k tank and found that the petcock leaks. I have a known good petcock from my old 75 tank.

The question is do you just fit it up metal to metal or should I apply some teflon tape or other sealant there?

The original seems to just bolt straight on - manuals don't mention anything unusual and a quick search here doesn't turn up anyone talking about it and the FAQ doesn't mention anything as well.

Thanks!

I just pulled mine and have a rubber seal at the base of the petcock. Does yours have this?

Didn't see one on either but I'll run take a look.

Just found this - TwoTired says:
For certain, teflon tape is the wrong way to go.  And, if you use the white type it is attacked by hydrocarbons.  The yellow type is used for gas situations.  But, as I said, teflon tape is just the wrong application for the bung threads.  The seal is to be made against at the end of the tank bung, not the threads.

And he's pretty definitive every time I see him post  ;D

No teflon for me.

Hmmm, I don't see anything that looks like a gasket except for some junk in the bottom of the petcock. No evidence of a gasket on the tanks either.

Anyone know for sure?
