alternative fuel?
« on: March 22, 2009, 10:12:49 AM »
avgas in a 750k? diesel fuel in a 2 stroke?  what do you think? i work in aviation and have access to both jet-a (high octane diesel), and avgas(100LL- 100 octane low lead gasoline). my buddy has a '69 yamaha 350 2 stroke, and wants to try jet fuel in it. i've been mulling over the idea of avgas in my K8, not 100% avgas, maybe 1/3. i've used it in '90 chevy that sat for 2yrs, started right up, i think it cleaned up the motor 'cause now it runs really well, just needed a trani to make it airworthy. any experiences, or opinions out there? ???

Avgas should be OK its just a waste of the octane rating,

I thought Jet A was clean Kerosene not diesel?

Your bike won't benefit from using avgas, if that's what you're asking.  It doesn't contain any more energy than 87 octane pump gas, and won't clean out your engine, either.

I knew many helicopter pilots (from the turbine helicopters) and al lof them had.. diesel cars. It goes very well in diesel engines.
And I used to run avgas in my 2 stroke CZ350 - no probs.. :D

of course it will be no problem... all it does is burn BETTER.  like less vapor pressure, and so many other things that i don't want to make it sound like i know about.

but like gordon said... its not going to add another 20hp... it will ask you to spend another 20 tho.   ;)

A diesel care will happily run on Kero---thats mostly what injector cleaner is but it will eventualy wear the pump.

If you do that here in UK, as it aint taxed as much so the politicians dont get as big a cut, you risk a £10,000 fine and confiscation of the vehicle

what about jet-a in a 2 stroke? '69 yamaha. jet-a is a cleaner diesel but still diesel. it won't add $'s to my budget 'cause i would get it from the fuel filter sump, fuel trucks must have sumps tested daily, 1 gal. is drawn out . might give it a try, not permanently. i heard old sprint car guys used avgas, with a few drops of oil, in their modified engines. must have given them something. i'm not racing but a fun test of a theory. oh, michelle rahal talked about using avgas on the nascar radio. i used to help with a hobby stocker on dirt back in the day, drivers were always searching for octane. i have to tinker ya know.

You're confusing octane rating with potential energy.  Higher octane gas resists detonation better, but does not make more power.   Unless you've modified your  engine to make higher compression, you don't need it and won't gain anything from using it.
