I forgot to take pics right away and had started to clean it. So, I stopped and clicked a few off. You can see the oil down the front of the engine. As a matter of fact, even with some scrubbing, you can still see it.  ::) ;D

Ya know, 10 years ago I woulda gagged at the sight of a cruiser/custom such as this. Seriously has grown on me in the last year or so. My friend has a CM450 and a 900C(?), and now you guys are invading the ranks with these machines.

Alright!

Kit, what about the member here who sells those fancy high tech "plastic" pistons? Milled down from a Lincoln LS I think. People swear by them.

oh, believe me, the list, it may become long. ;)

Took X to work this morning, sitting down to brekkie of wheetabix 'n xtra creamy coffee.  Soon, I'm going to go out 'n play.  First the carbs come off, so when I get cold, I'll have something to do inside.

Then stuffing cleaning rags in the carb boots to keep the inside clean (LOL) and spraying the motor w/ a little WD-40, then taking to 'im with a tooth brush and paint brush, getting all the crap out of the seams and blowing a little foot powder on once  he's dry to see where he's drooling from.  PO said it had good compression, so that makes me wonder if the head gasket is actually ok and it's seeping out the rubber gaskets up top.  I wouldn't be surprised, but then those gaskets up top would have to be MUNCHED bad for the sheer volume of oil all over when we checked it out.

Planning on wiping down, cleaning and inspecting the headers/exhaust, too, to see what we're dealing with.  The ends of the trumpets are mostly un-rusted and unhol-ey so unless hell really broke loose on the inside with the baffles, I think they're in real good shape; possibly replaced when the bike went down.  I hear there's a crack and a hole on the timing cover somewhere.  That's... hmm... I'll have to look.

Coils, CDIs, Battery, maybe check the air filter and evict the mice.  We KNOW the plug wires and caps are crap, so that's no biggie.

Clutch cable is stiff as hell... may not be really reparable.  Dunno if I should bother putting in my prolink lube in or not.  That stuff is great, btw.  $9ish at any bicycle shop and a dab'll do ya. (or for crappy cables, put in at the top and pump the cable on the casing 'til it comes out the other end, then wipe muddy looking rust until your arm falls off.)  The metal lubricant stays in and the carrier solvent evaporates so your bicycle chain/cables/whatever end up feeling dry and not collecting crap.

I'll take pics all the way thru so you guys can feel like you were there, and so X can imagine doing it without having to hear me cuss all the way through. ;D

Basically making sure we don't have to drop a large fortune on the bike to get a good running ride out of it.. rather save a small fortune and have a parts bike than blow a large fortune.  I suspect our 'limit' is piston/crank/bottom end work, trying to weld anything in the bottom end... etc.

I.e. stuff we can do okay ourselves... though we will likely be ok with replacing the head gasket and seeing if the guys at the shop can help walk us through it so we don't install the cam wrong.

For now, until I have a compression tester on my person, it turns over nice and fast like my bike, has spark, doesn't fire.  No crunchy, scary noises in the top or bottom ends while it's turning over. Not even a "Can full of walnuts and tomato juice" sound.  Actually sounds a lot like my bike, which I take to be a good sign.

I'm also planning on accosting the tank with some rubbing compound and wax to see if I can't get some of the scrapes et. all out of it.  It's a bummer it's so beat-up because it's far less sun-faded than mine was and the original color mine was.

...and Marti, I cry inside every time I see your bike's 'before' pics just because that's what mine could've looked like had my PO not jacked it and the radiator place not f*cked my tank and...

If that doesn't work.... let me know and I could cut you some stainless ones.

All I need are dimensions. and what material you want me to use.

New update:
Went out and started taking pics (they're to come; this is like one of those novels with all the pics in the middle, way past anything they pertain to.)

No new drips, but as the bike hasn't been under compression, I suppose it doesn't mean much.  On inspection, saw bit of pinched rubber gasket coming from the valve cover.  It'd be interesting if that was 'it'.

CDIs/Igniters are shot.  The black backing melted out from the insides just like mine had.  The main fuse is corroded pretty badly and also needs some cleanup.

Turns out the carbs are new to the bike.  Will need to look up the numbers but 'CB650' was sharpied on the top and they appear identical to mine.  90 mains, haven't seen the numbers on the idle jets yet.

Took the airbox off, etc.  None of the breather tubes were in place, and there was a big gap in the boot. Yay! Way to lean out an already lean bike.  Insulators are way soft compared to mine, probably NOS at some point.  I can actually squeeze them with my fingers.  Neat.

The carb bowls aren't bad.  Soaking everything in simple green to take some of the crap off/out.  Haven't blasted out the accel pump or those passages yet because I just don't have enough brakekleen atm.  Needs new air cutoff diaphragms and accel pump. Would probably do well to have a whole gasket set. FECK Honda OEM, their quality is equivalent to Keyster as far as I've noticed, so K is getting my business. Not paying $40/kit again unless they're solid gold.  It's interesting. Some parts look new and well cared for, and some, like the float bowl gaskets, are flattened, rotted, and held in with yamabond or the like.  ???

Still working on the carbs, but making lunch quick. Was going to go for a spin today. I'm not sure about it, though.  The weather's still kinda cold/rainy/crappy and after work yesterday, just staying inside and warm (or in the garage in front of the heater) seems much more appealing.

So, some "What-the-F*ck-ery"
Finally got down to separating 3 and 4, and that longer, thinner connecting tube was a little bent. Then I see the hole in 3 where it fits in is a little f*cked.  Then I pull it apart and get a surprise.

Well... that's not right. ???

I take my handy dandy poker and go in either side, manage do (Thank GOD!) fish out both broken-off ends.  Now wtf, why would they snap off like that if they were so easy to get out?  I guess some things you never do find out.

So the hole in 3 for the fitting looked like this:

Not cool.  The breakage told me, however, it could possibly be bent back into shape with a minimal amount of deformation. I put the remaining middle part of the tube back in the hole and started slowly working at it from the edges.

This was the result:

It's not perfect, and in that shape, def. not gas-tight.  HOWEVER the edges come pretty close to sealing, and I have a good feeling about being able to JB weld it, let the weld cure, then sand it smooth.  I've got the stick type, which I way prefer to the goo in a toob.  Planning on taking the plastic end of a Q-tip (sans cotton) and sticking it in the hole at the end of the tube receiver, putting just a smidge in (enough to spackle that shut on the inside) and using the broken middle part of the tube to make sure it's a nice smooth edge.  Then I'll add some from the outside and work it in, then add bit over the top to make sure the fix stays in place.  It should be mostly structurally supported by the aluminum that's still there, but a little help in a weak spot never hurt anyone.

I should also say that it should be gas-tight down where the o-ring will be, even with this deformation, but a little JBweld still couldn't hurt this...

just need to hunt down a new toob.

Hey, you might want to PM Ghost on here.

I gave him a bag of PD50 carb parts that I know had a tube or 2 like that.

He might be willing to help you out... since they were free to him.

Will do.  The fix for the carb body came out great (was there ever any doubt?) ;)

Here's an 'after' pic.  I love how you can use a wet surface (finger, knife, whatever) to smooth curing JB Weld.  I used a wet knife tip to smooth the outer surface, then after laying a bit of 'spackle' on the inside, wet one of the ends of the LOLtube and used it to smooth the inner surface. came out looking like this:

Hey kit....
Sorry.

I kept those.
I did give him a bag o parts, but (why, I don't know) I kept those tubes and two of the main fuel rail tubes.
The O-rings on it are a bit suspect, so you might have to source a set of those out though.

PM me your addy, and i'll ship it in a day or 2.

Havoc, there is a leaded grade of stainless, much easier to machine, just make sure its compatible to brake fluid.

Another choice is aluminum, hard anodized

.......................................................................................

From what I can tell the factories use drawn shells or cups, so very near size, and only need to grind a bit off the od.

See why I ask? I know nothing about metalurgy but I can machine with the best of em.

356-T6 alloy? Or something different? Don't want costs to go out of control you know?

Send me your old one.... chances are it's not totally out of round nor out of spec. Just pitted in places.

Either that or I could sweet talk the parts girl at my local honda into letting me borrow one for a minute or two.

Or I could call Honda directly.

But I don't feel like waiting for my junk to fall off to talk to a real person.
