Painting frame - por15?
« on: March 17, 2009, 06:23:50 AM »
I'm about to paint my CB500 frame but I'm not sure what paint to use. I have decided to do it myself, so powercoat is out. I have paint gun for my compressor but are more keen on going for the old fashioned brush. I'm not sure which paint to use tough. I have read a lot about por15 and it seems that it is very durable and tough which sounds perfect. But...do I need to finish off with something else than por15 because of the UV sensitivity of por15? I live in denmark (Scandinavia) where the summers are quite short and the bike will only be used for some cruising in my free time when the weather allows it. What I'm trying to say is that my bike will not be in the sun very much so do I need a finishing coat of paint over the por15? I should also mention that my frame has been sandblasted which should give it a good surface for the por15 to stick on.

Next question...

I am also going to paint my rims (black). Can I use the por15 on the rims as well or can someone recommend something better?

yes you need to topcoat the por 15. It isn't hard, just get a can of aerosol black and give it a once over. If you prefer to roll on mix rustoleum with thinner (80% paint 20% thinner) and roll it over the top of the por 15.

Me and a buddy of mine painted the frame of his jeep with POR15. In about a years time it scrached off and pealed. Also from what i understand other people have had the same issue with the stuff. I personally wouldn't use it.

Theres a company called eastwood paint.

Theres the link to there chassis paint section. This is the stuff we used on the jeep once we striped off all the POR15. Its been 5 years now and not a issue with it. With all the off roading its done not a scratch on the frame. My buddy accidentally dropped some break fluid on it and it held up to it. This is the stuff to use IMO

Por 15 seems to work great as a rust coating.  My father has been using it on a vw project and it's good stuff, but it should be topcoated.  My brother painted his 750 frame with plain rustoleum black and it looks good.  He just brushed it on.

++and you will need to remove or at least scuff the chrome from the rims before you paint if you want it to last.  Personally, I like the chrome with red or black finish on the center hump or on each side of it.  Something like the 1930s Vincents........

I've had good luck with Por 15 but I will tell you I use a lot of Eastwood products and they are great. Also I was thinking if you used Eastwoods' stuff it would be a lot easier to touch up later if you ever had to. I've used their exhaust & manifold coating, and recently painted a frame with the chassis paint and it came out great. I've painted many brake calipers off cars & motorcycles with the caliper paint kit with excellent results.

Thanks for all your inputs. I have decided to go for por15 followed by a top cote. I cannot get Eastwoods products here in Denmark so that wasn't really an option for me. I'm aware that some people had bad luck with the por15 coming off after a wile but my sandblasted surface should according to the por15 dealer be a good enough surface for the paint to stick properly...I hope he is right :-\
So I just have one question left: How many coats of por15 should I apply? And how many coats of the final paint?

The Por 15 comes with a bunch of info on how to use and how to prep the surface. I think all it takes is one or two coats if I remember correctly. They make a topcoat for their product as well.

Some of the POR-15 coatings DO NOT require a top coat.  I did my other bike's frame (Yamaha TW200) with it, and it hasn't cracked/chipped/faded/peeled whatever.  I used their "Chassis coat black", which is a semi-gloss.  If you want black, try the "Black-cote".  As with any surface you're painting, make sure you use a good degreaser/solvent before hand.
