I've been a member of the local sport bike clubs before, and while I really enjoyed the pace of the rides, inevitably there’s some squid that thinks this is some hot race club. I remember being at a weekend sport bike event that saw some 300 riders participate in the annual “Sport Bike West” held in Kelowna. While camping at the group site the evening before the organized ride, squids could be heard bragging that this bike or that bike had the highest power to weight ratio or fastest top speed, etc.
The following day the ride started with those squids setting off at near race pace and by rides end almost a dozen riders went down. Some were serious. Luckily no deaths. That was the last “Sport Bike West” event for me and second to last for the organizer as the police started to seriously crack down.
I’ve many stories about squids and stunters nearly causing crashes with other riders out for a social sport bike ride simply because of their antics and inexperience in groups.
Find yourself a couple of good solid fast riders that you can trust to ride in a spirited and safe, predictable manner, then you will have a group to be proud of.
Good Luck
