What's the minimum needed to get this bike to fire?
« on: March 23, 2009, 12:52:16 PM »
I just rebuilt the carbs, and I want to see if this bike will fire.

What all do I need to get this thing to fire? Headers, carbs, engine, gasoline, throttle, clutch, oil tank...?

required for firing:

air
spark
fuel

So that your bike doesnt explode:
Oil

So that valves dont burn up and you dont blow your eardums out:
Headers (pipe and muffler are a plus

So that you have some proper AF ratio:
Some kind of airbox with a filter, or jetted appropriately for use of some other intake.
No.

Great, that's good news.

I don't have the new float bowl gaskets, so until then I might reuse the old ones. Or would it be better to make a temp gasket out of some gasket material? Probably neither, but I just want to see this thing revived.

I'd reuse them if it were me.
If they're not torn that is.

yeah, they're getting reused for now.

Electronically speaking, I guess I need the CDI and magneto and all that hooked up? I gutted out the electronics, so I need to redo the portions needed to create spark. What exactly do I need?

Thanks for the help guys.

No.

So we hooked up the CDI (I think that's what the thing under the tank that has the spark plug boots is called), all the stuff on the battery box, pretty much everything but the turn signals and the spedo/tach. Do we need a battery to create spark or could we kick start and still get spark?

Just out of curiosity, what bike are we talking about?

the things your spark plugs go to  are your coils.  They connect to the wiring harness (careful, the manual will tell you which wires go on top, which on the bottom, and which order to connect the coils/wires/plugs in.)

You do need the complete wiring harness, and if you've 'gutted' it, you ought to clean every connector before putting it back together, your bike will thank you.

Lets see it has a kicker so it aint a 650, it has an oil tank so that makes it a 750! ;D

To add to what mlinder has already said, you also need compression.  The air and fuel need to mix together in the right ratio and the spark needs to be delivered at the right time.

Spark:
You need
- battery
- correctly wired & functioning electrics
- spark plug
Read you manual on how to set the timing.  Basically, you need your points to open or electronic ignition to trigger when your pistons are a few degrees shy of TDC.  What type of ignition do you have, points or electronic?

Compression:
You need a tester for this.  If you have one GREAT, otherwise let's skip this discussion for now.

air/fuel:
You need properly adjusted carbs, but I'm sure you knew that.  Adjusting carbs takes talent, skill, experience and a little black magic.  If you are like me and lack all that and are also short on luck, then meticulous adherence to the instructions in the manual will have to do.  If your goal is to just hear a your engine kick over for a half dozen cycles or so, then you can fake a decent air/fuel mixture with carb cleaner or starting fluid.  Don't get carried away as this stuff isn't real friendly to your engine, which is designed to run on petrol, not ether.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

...however, if you wanna see your bike burst into flames, ether is great.  Ask how I know.

Compression is a go, I have solid compression in all 4 cylinders.

The carbs are adjusted so that the bike should run for a bit, but not run well. I hadn't looked at the points yet. I'm going to go print out my manual and sit down for awhile. I have spring break off, so I wanted to get as much done with the bike before school returns and beats me into the ground. I was hoping just to hear it fire so I know I can continue to tear it down.

Haha

I'm a design student, the past four months were riddled with portfolio-building projects. It payed off though, I got an internship in sunny Irvine California.

The problem is I'm broke right now, so I'm trying to do all the things that cost little or no money....which is nothing.
