The Carpy tool costs $36 (with shipping to AZ from CA). The OTC tool is $56 and will fit ANY retainer of this type (Amazon Prime for me, so I am not including shipping).  Not bickering, just providing data.

Thanks guys. When I reinstall the retainer do I have to do anything special to be sure it is secure?

You take a center punch and place it where the threads meet and smack it with a hammer to emulate the factory staking.

Twice is enough 180deg apart.

I destroyed my retainer completely at last bearing replacement. It seems I did not drill enough. I did too good punches last time.
What happen if retainer is not locked?
Bearing is hold in place with a sleeve as on the brake side without retainer.

It can back out, and when it does it will bind, destroy itself, and generate a ton of heat which may damage other stuff. Don't mess about with this, punch it.

I read on a previous thread that some just use loctite, is this not good enough?
