Need a 4-into-1 header recommendation
« on: March 23, 2009, 06:12:01 PM »
Hey gang-

My uncle's K3 750 had a 4-into-1 header pipe on it for many years (don't know the brand) and 2 summers ago, it had finally rusted so badly that it opened a hole in the bottom. (It didn't look bad until he started it up in the grass and the grass was blowing around under it!)

So, no problem, I thought as I had a spare 4-into-1 header off of my bike so we swapped it out and that was that- or so we thought. The issue is his bike has a lowering kit, plus a Harley 16-inch wheel conversion, so it rides much lower. When going over large bumps or pulling into a driveway (going over the slope on the curb), the header kisses the pavement. This didn't happen with the old one.

After comparing the two, the old header had the four pipes coming together in "square" pattern, with the upper two pipes and bottom two pipes side-by-side and parallel with the ground, enabling it to tuck up tightly under the frame. The newer header has the pipes coming in differently, with one pipe on the top, two in the middle and one on the bottom, forming a "diamond" shape and hanging lower on the bike.

Can anyone recommend a fairly cheap header that might work more like the old one? The muffler is still in decent shape, so he can just clamp it onto the new header pipe. Since the weather is starting to warm up, I know he's going to be asking me about it soon... ::)

That's a nice looking system, but I know he's not gonna spend that kinda money.

Any other ideas?

I've seen some options there, but I'd like to have an idea as to what brand, etc. to look for.

Cycle X has one on thier site for $219 called a sidewinder that would probably work. Check it out.

Pick up a stock header.  The collector is as flat as you can get with all of the pipes coming together adjacent to each other.  I don't know about interfacing you old muffler to a stock header.  I'm assuming that it won't work and you may have to get an entire "F" exhaust.
Your other option is to put to exhaust together in place, take it off in one piece and heat the whole collector up with a Rosebud.  When it is orange hot and malleable, grab your big f***king hammer and squish it flatter.  Make sure you get it right the first time as I would hate to see the welds at the collector break under work hardening after a few too many times in the fire.  Don't quench it after you are done.  Let it cool naturally.  A bit of high temp black and your done.  A blacksmith might be able to do it for you as they have the proper heat sources.  Doing it all in one piece guarantees that you won't have any problem getting the two part together after the squishing is done.   The only problem is that once you are done you are committed.  There's no turning back now, Jonesy!

The Mac 4-1 on Cycle X is a pretty good bargain for the cost conscious -- only $99.  You can wrap it, paint it or blast and coat it down the road.
