Any specific filters to look out for? I have the same issue on my 78 750K and even though I acid washed the tank etc. I know it's only a matter of time the rust starts up again....

Here are a couple of different profiles avail depending on how much space you have avail. and where, (this is from J.C. Whitney). Match your fuel line diameter and make sure you install them with the flow arrow pointing toward the carbs.

i installed an in-line filter, should I take out the screen in the tank?

Generally the inlines are better than thetank filter BUT the tank filter can take out large particles before they get to the inline. Although if this is happening, then it is time to clean out the tank.

Clearance under the 550 seat is tight, you need a filter with 90 degrees between inlet and outlet. www.heeters.com has them. Sintered bronze rather than paper.

What's nice about the in tank filter is that it also keeps particles out of the petcock.  The ones since 75 (for the CB550, anyway) have a cone in cone arrangement, fit tightly, and abrasive particles can route grooves in the soft plastic cone during operation of the valve.  This can effect the sealing ability and even leaking later on.  I use the petcock each time I start and stop the bike. Chunks of rust and other debris have scored a couple of the petcocks I have received.

Sock was shot , so i bought brass screen inline filters at NAPA for $2.35 each just to get the bike going. Tucked up under the tank with about 5 inches of line from the carbs. In 3500 miles, look like the day they were new.

Oh, I forgot to mention the damaged scored petcock cones came to me with damaged or removed in tank filter screens.

Anybody know what the in tank filter micron rating is vs the external ones?

I bought 3 ft of petrol line (2 1/2 feet more than I actually needed...) and an inline filter for ~$20NZD so should be well under $10US.

I cleaned out the big rust chunks and particles from my tank, cleaned the mesh filter and petcock, and for peace of mind use an inline filter.  I only did this on Wednesday night, but Im hoping for many trouble free miles....

Up to now I only used the petcock filter, but I found fine debris on the carb bowls so I'm going to fit inlines also. I believe the petcock filter doesn't really seal well on the center, as the mesh doesn't have o-ring there.

  • Shut up when you're talkin' to me!!
Well ...Ya know?...A few months back,CBEN from Australia told me about his bike cutting out because of the new inline gas filter he had in there. He said he went to a larger diameter filter and it was ok.I could not figure why that could have been a problem until I removed mine.It made alot of improvement on throttle response.I would like to see this topic in the FAQ'S because I am now thinking that anything to do with fuel, fuel supply,& proper carb maintenence is a good thing to share info on.

Speaking of CBEN, anybody know what happened to him?  I haven't heard anything from him for a couple of months now.
