what to coat my exhaust with?
« on: October 28, 2005, 12:05:48 PM »
I have a bare metal exhaust I'd like to coat with something. I have heard oven paint if I want the cheap way which I may do, but I'd like some other options also. I don't want to chrome it by the way. I've heard of aluminium coating? that would be nice looking.

They make header paint in various colors.  I'm thinking of doing black header wrap on my cafe project and you can get that stuff in other colors.  Theres also ceramic coating.

Having your exhaust ceramic coated by a decent shop will be the best route.
Pretty much any color can be applied , but they are all flat in finish.
If you have them coated silver , then polished , it will look like a dull chrome

I had a set of pipes along time ago ceramic coated black , then polished.
Looked pretty slick....

Call Charlies Place in SF. They should be able to hook you up.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

don't know what type of coat you want, but if you want a cheap and durable black finish, pick up some rust stop spray, all kinds of brands out there normally a phosphoric acid blend, clean up the pipes getting all the loose rust off and wash with soap and water to get all the oil off too, then spray the pipes real well with the rust stop let it dry and run the bike a while to heat cure it.
it ends up looking like a set of new black pipes, lasts a long time, the pipes on my bike were done early last year and look great still, I have a set sitting in a pile of other junk behind the garage that have been there for a few years (damaged, but someday I may need a part from them) and they still look great.
running them too hot (as in bad tune) will turn them greyish right on the top of the bend at the head, but tune up and respray th area and they look good again.
