best tire for wet road
« on: October 28, 2005, 12:10:10 PM »
It is second time I skid my rear wheel on the wet road and went down. First time it was on the turn (no braking) and second time while braking on the straight (I tried to be really easy on the rear break but still). My knee still hurts and I as it does I am thinking that I probably need a new rear tire. After all it might still be cheaper then keep replacing turn signal and mirrors even if there will be no doctor's bills. ;) This is my first bike and I got it in the summer. I replace front tire which was cracked all around but I kept the rear one.

So, the question I have: what is the decent rear tire for 750f  to ride on the wet surface ?  I know that the skill  makes all the difference but at least I  will not blame a tire next time (knock-knock-knock).

Thanks a lot ! - Serge

if it ain't broken it does not have enough features yet..

My Dunlops have been great, alot better than the cheapo vintage looking ones I got it with.  Is the rotation on the rear tire correct?  Should be an arrow pointing the direction the tire should travel when moving forward.  Wouldnt be the first time one had been mounted wrong.  The treads designed to channel water so if its going the wrong direction it could be causing you to hydroplane more easily.

Serge, the road is super slippery just after the rain begins. The oil floats to the top before it is washed off.

Tips- avoid the middle of the lane (especially at intersections) because there is more oil from cars there.  Watch out for any kind of metel grate/ manhole cover.
Sounds like you have a tire that was made just after the invention of the word "round".  Any rubber product that old is not going to do any good whether it has tread or not.  Any of the top 4 or 5 manufacturers will be a huge improvement over what you have now.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

In addition to the oil mentioned, after a prolonged dry period with vehicle tires abrading rubber particles all over the pavement, the first few minutes of rain, or a light rain, add a rubber slurry to the mix. Wait if you can, if you can't, take it easy.

Serge,
I use avon roadrunners that seem fine in wet and dry. I try not to ride in the wet if I can as the bike does not like getting wet!  ;)
However, if you went down whilst braking in a straight line you need to get some tuition and check if your rear brake is grabbing or sticking!
When the rear wheel locks you have to steer in to the skid similar to the way you do in a car, in otherwise, provide a little opposite lock. I would not try this until you have been taught by someone, preferably on thier bike.
Jim.

Thanks a lot for all the replies!  It seems I can not detect yet when the tire just starts to skid. I practiced locking the rear tire on the dry pavement, but on the wet it just goes down to fast ..  -Serge

I know the feeling, everytime I go out I test the brakes in the first few hundred yards, also I test the surface. Problem is the surface constantly changes, so caution at all times is the way, especially in the wet.

I'm with Steve. Sometimes you get caught out in it though when you don't expect it.
