i finally got the wring gremlins sorted and got the k4 fired up but it was making a godawful noise in the top end. first question there should be a fair amoint of oil spurt when i pull off a tappet cover even at idle shouldnt there? well there isnt. i THINK that the oil passages to the top end became clogged and i think i migh have done some damage to the cam or cam journals. i'm ready to quit at this point and save my pennies for someone else to build my damn motor. does anyone want to buy the damn thing?

I don't think your going to see small block ford oil pressure or even sb Chevy for that matter, are you getting any oil at all?

i pulled the tappet cover and there was nothing at all coming out of the hole and making a mess. the caps themselves werent oily on the inside either.

hope you did not hear any high pitched squealing going on - it takes a bit of time to get the oil up into the valve cover - so I would take the tappet inspection covers off and squirt some oil around in there from an oil can - then start her up - give it up to a minute running and you should see oil squirting out of your tappet covers....

How long did you run the motor for?

Behind the tappet cover, it's not like the oil's going to come spurting out at high pressure, more like occasional droplets and oil mist. If the motor hadnt' run in a while, you have to run the motor long enough to squirt oil all the way up to the top of the motor, which can take a few moments.

I hate to ask, but did the oil pressure light go out while you were running it?
I have to prime my oil pump to get pressure going, and one usually has to minimally prime the pump by pouring a quart or so through one of the tappet covers. I know this is elementary, but didn't see any note about this.

thing is i had excellent oil pressure, 40 psi at idle cold. it's not a squealing sound it's like a dry clacking sort of sound. the cam chain is adjusted properly (i re-adjusted to be sure) this bike is also running VERY rough.

If you have a mis fire or a cyl not pulling it's weight it is going to rattle, pistons are used to doing the pushing, not being dragged along

Jeff, I don't do work for hire - it has to remain a hobby, so I vowed long ago to never profit from it.

I will however be happy to help you with yours. I promise if you ever ride mine, you will have to have a motor like it. You did know I'm bringing it to Columbia in the morning, right?

By the way, I poured 1 quart into the motor through the valve tappet covers - 1/2 a quart each side. I also took my plugs out and turned the engine over until I had plenty of oil pressure before ever turning the handle kill switch to "on" and installing the plugs. Try that before you throw in the towel.

this definately sounds like a dry kind of rubbing. well thank goodness for the frame kit i got from you gordon, as i'm going to look into the top end tomorrow.

yes it did, because if the motor had to come out this bike was going into the corner of the shop with a tarp on it.

i have discovered the problem, looks like sonmething got into the cylinder either when i had the head off to do a new gasket or something got in through the plug hole. #2 cylinder has VERY deep scoring and the piston has deep gouges in it as well.

no the cylinder is so badly trashed i'd have to go to an 836 to get rid of the gouging i think. im trying to find someone thats willing to trade me a decent working top end for a titled 75 750f chassis

Fuzzy, in your wanted ad,
just mention you will take one piston & sleeve.. easier cheaper to ship.. someone might have a block with a bad hole or fin damage.

Altho oversize same as yours is preffered, I would not obsess about it..

I have a spare motor with no head that I can pull some parts from if you like. It's a K4.

The piston seems easy to pull out, but the sleeve? How do you remove one?

I'll pull the parts you need, just let me know what they are.

oh i meant the entire cylinder block. if theres good compression then just the pistons and cylinders. that would be very cool uncrash, thanks a bunch. just let me know what you need to get for it all.

Well Fuz, that cylinder block is yours.

Here's its history:

Was once in a K6 cafe that sat for a long time. A guy from Maine bought it then got ripped off by a local bike shop when he took this "stuck" motor in to them to be fixed. They tore the top end off without quoting him and then said, "that will be 2K for the build" no overbore, porting or whatever.

To me it looks like one of the piston rings and cylinder sleeve shared some oxidation and got stuck. You can see a little rust line on a sleeve. I bet no one tried to get this motor unstuck...

Anyway I looked at this bike and didn't want to buy the project. Otto goes over there and sweet talks the guy out of the bike for free! (Good one Otto). Otto then graciously gives me the motor. I gave the head away all ready. This thing is destined to be parted out for people who need it!

Anyway let's get the list so I understand what you need.

Cylinder block with sleeves still in there. Pistons with their rings. Anything else?

You pay shipping and boxing. I have a good UPS store nearby and they box and ship for USPS or UPS.

If you want to send a part laying around your garage that will help my 78ss cafe build I wouldn't object. (Rotors, shorter cables,?)

Just let me know and I'll get it together for you.
