Futboll vs soccer
« on: March 22, 2009, 09:03:33 AM »
Just curious: any people on here fans of american soccer?
Personally I root for the New England Revolution as they are the closest to me, only reason actually. Although I do feel Toronto this year will go far in the playoffs.

If I ever win a lottery I plan on going to Europe to see some real competitions.

To an extent, I have become something of a fan. My son-in-law has always been into soccer. He was the asst. soccer coach at Notre Dame for a couple of years but moved on to working with Adidas. I like the more constant play and those players have some kind of stamina.

D.C. United fan here.
Quality of MLS is improving , but still quite a ways from European premier leagues.
MLS is generally fed ancient tidbits from the overseas  leagues.
Some of the old guys can still play though.
I like to watch homegrown guys like Hedjuk (sp?)--a tough customer.

Soccer is all about momentum--build good momentum and good things

However, as in life, you can have good momentum and still come out

Wizards fan here, futbol is a fun game to watch, is good for the kids and hooligans but Rugby is a gentleman's game.

The reason it won’t catch on big time in the US is they play the game for approx two 45 minute sessions with no breaks so the telly people would be unable to show adverts. I've watched your Super Bowl and the game seems to be run by the television people it's just all stop start for adverts I presume we don’t get to watch them on this side of the water thank goodness.

yep, modern american football was designed around television.
That's why it does well here. 10 seconds of action in between 30 seconds of rest.
I don't get it either, rugby and soccer are more fun to watch for me.

Celtic United...??

Do you mean Glasgow Celtic Football Club.

I'm a Reading FC fan and we had Bobby Convey from DC Utd in our team for a couple of years. Our 'keeper Marcus Hahnemann is also a yank (our reserve 'keeper is an aussie!)

The crowd would chant "USA USA" when Marcus made a good save.   8)

I think US soccer did have a snowball's until Beckham and his circus arrived in town. When his team contracted him for silly money for very little in return, it put the whole league in jeopardy.
It's gotta come from the grassroots, otherwise it's only about money, not what it should be; passion.
And that takes time.

From what I have been hearing, the European clubs have many USA goalies. Something about most USA goalies also playing other games as they grow up seems to make them play differently.

Celtic United = Glasgow Celtic Football Club.?? I will have to chcek and see if it was the same team that played here in Foxborough, Ma. last year.

Its wierd, I coach kids soccer and up to about age 12, half the kids in school are playing it and loving it. But it seems to become less popular as they get older, and even when they are playing it, only a few know about professional players and teams. However, the ever increasing Latino population love soccer (really called football) and if it ever takes off here professionally it will be because of their passion for the game.
The Americans really don't know what they are missing with the World Cup, there is no other sporting event like it. Each game is like the Super Bowl but about 10x more intense because it is your country against another country not just a city playing another city.

Nice  to see real football make it onto a subject board, For North American, Toronto, it is my home town, as for outside Canada, I'm with you Bill the Demon, I'm a Rangers fan from childhood, I grew up watching Hockey night in Canada on Friday nights and SPL on Saturday mornings. Last year I had the chance to go to Ibrox for a match up against Inverness Caley Thistle. After the game, we were approached by a security guy at the players exit while we were getting some autographs. When he found out we were Canadian fans, he gave us a walk through of the staging area and then walked us out the players ramp and onto the pitch!!!! Here I was with my wife and sons standing centre field at Ibrox. I thought I had died and moved on. He asked us if we wanted any autograph in particular, when I told him Ally Mcoist, he laughed, and tols us to wait a minute, five minutes later he comes walking down the hall way with SuperAlly. I was like a kid again, and he was such a gentleman, signed our flags and got the security guy to take pictures for us

Amazing
If ever there was a creator of bastard sons, it is the open road, for she has claimed so many young men yearning for freedom......

Yeah Dukie,
we like the sports where if you try to take what I have, in this case a puck, we will fight you for it.
Not lay on the ground and cry hoping the nice referee will give it back to you, in this case a soccerball. ;D ;D ;D ;D
