Removing grips without destroying them
« on: October 19, 2005, 07:59:15 PM »
Anybody got a great way of removing grips aside from cutting them off? I would like to scab a nice set of grips from a bike I just got and replace the old OE grips on the 750. My OE grips are the nice finned ones but I really like the styling of these new ones.

Ideas?

I don't know, but I'll be watching for answers along with you. Would like to do the same with a parts bike I have without tatering them. The last set I tried ended up looking like they'd been through a garbage disposal when I was done with them.

I have done it on my mountain bike many times. I use a syringe with hipodermic needle. Use some soapy water -with dishwashing liquid-. Remove the switches and pump the water from that side. Not much will go in, so twist the grips until they accept more. A little heat from a hairdrier goes a long way too, as it softens the rubber and plastic. I also use a screwdriver to put it in so I make room for the water, that once inside makes his way. I don't care about scratching the bars with the screwdriver because there will always be a grip over it.

Air compressor with a ball-inflator needle.  Works great!

Just pour boiling water on them for a few seconds. Once hot they will easily slide/twist off.

Like Bodi said, boiling water is good, if possible dip 'em in a container of really hot water for a few minutes and they'll come off easy. I like the ball inflator trick, I've never tried that!  Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I'll give that boiling water thing a try.

The needle thing I can see something real dumb and bad happening trying that method. ;)

Thanks Bodi

If they are glued on there pretty good, get a can of WD-40, stick the straw underneath the grips and shoot some in there.  They will come loose.

The boiling water trick worked well for me. I used a tea kettle for the water. Only pouring about 2 cups at a time on the grips. So far I have removed grips that range from stock grips, grab ons, kuyakan, and well just everything. This trick does the thing everytime.
