going to the dark side..... gotta job with Harley
« on: March 26, 2009, 12:16:59 PM »
After being out of work around 2 months, I had my first interview this morning at 10 am. Noon I get a call telling me to come in tomorrow, fill out my paperwork, and pee in a cup. I start Saturday in the parts dept, and will probably train there for a little while and then I may go over to be the service ticket writer.

Anyone out there worked at a Harley shop before?
Any advice?
Think they will make me park my CB across the street or something?
How do you tell someone they need a $500 tune up on a push rod twin with a straight face?

I am happy to have a job, believe me. A little shocked/surprised its with the HD shop though.
It will be cool to work around motorcycles, even if the ones they sell don't float my boat (except the 1200 sporty flat tracker....). Can't be any worse then the Triathlete prima donnas I had to deal with at my last job, and at least I won't be too tempted to spend my paycheck before I even leave the store.
Now to learn about 105 years of bikes and parts.... That should take a minute.

Should I break out my old leather with "FTF" and upside down HD patches from my long ago Sportster days for my first day? I did rock my SOHC CB750 workshirt from Lowbrow Customs to my interview, and that seems to have worked out OK.

Once you have dealt with a few customers you will frost over fairly quickly. I was in the Loan business 4 years ago, trust me you frost over.

But, fercrisakes, it's a pushrod twin... couldn't be simpler.
I guess people like that are the ones that made it so I could earn $50k working on freaking bicycles too.
If we (people who wrench their own bikes) were the norm, I guess a lot more people would be out of work.

Wow!  Comparing a Honda owner to a castrated male on a Honda specific website?  That takes some balls! :o ;D ;D

Congrats on the new job.  I'm sure you've been sweating it a bit.

Will your store the the starting point for all DC area SOHC4 rides?

Congrats on getting a job!
It can be a frustrating process at times.... especially when you are low on $$!

And working for harley and riding a honda?
Thats like dealing coke, but all you do is smoke weed..... :)

How do you tell someone they need a $500 tune up on a push rod twin with a straight face?

Just practice lying!
Start with little kids, and work your way up on the "trust" ladder...Go on to cops, clergymen, etc and ramble off random lies for no reason.
Just make sure they are whoppers. And do your best to not smile.
Hey, they got a credit card... so that 500 turns into 7-800 by the time they pay it off!

that's the comedic "ba dum ching" rim shot, not the 45cal variety for those who it confused...

Congratulations on your new job. Can you get me a discount  ;)

I've put 27,000 miles on my Fat Boy in the last 5 years without a single problem. Good bike. Just remember HD stands for Hundred Dollars. If we get out of there for less we are happy or you screwed up the cash register.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)
