'71 SL350 Bobber Project
« on: March 26, 2009, 06:51:55 PM »
I've been working on this project through most of the winter and it's finally coming to an end.  Very few details are left and I hope to have it running by next week some time.

This is what the bike looked like when I bought it.  The kid I bought it from had good intentions, but neither the money, tools, or know-how to get it done, so I bought it cheap.  I saw the potential, and he just wanted to get rid of it.

Here is what my apartment looked like as I started tearing into the project.  It was already stripped down pretty well, but very dirty.  I didn't want to be working on a dirty bike the whole winter, so I tore down to clean up the motor and frame.

I'm going for a bobber look, not a chopper look, so I wanted to slam the front end as much as possible.  Makes the 21" front wheel look even bigger.

Little more cleaning on the motor, plus I ordered a SS Engine bolt set to clean it up even more.

I decided that the stock SL350 front forks where way too long to get the look I wanted, so my buddy gave me a setup of forks off of a cb500 or 550.  They're a larger diameter, so I ordered a new top and bottom tree from ebay.  Since the trees where wider, I had to get a wider front axle, so back to ebay I go.  I still need to shave down the front axle spacers to center the wheel.

The newer forks still need to push through the trees to get the front end where I want it, but it's not nearly as bad as it was.  Down the road, after riding the bike for a bit, I'll probably get the the fork tubes cut down appropriately.

I spent about 2 hours masking off the entire wheel front wheel so that I could paint the spokes.  I'm not a crazy perfectionist, but I wanted it to turn out right, so I took my time.  Although I did slack when it came to masking of the inside of the hub, so I decided to just paint that.  I still need to do the same on the rear wheel, but need to wait for the tire and broken spoke to be replaced first.

Even though I didn't take my bike this route, I found this picture to be VERY inspiring and would love to do a similar project down the road.  One of my favorites
http://www.halffastchicago.com/0245.jpg

Here's a look at what a stock SL 350 looks like

After a lot of looking around and talking about the project with my friends, I've decided to redo the rear end.  Right now it's hardtail is using the stock swing arm.  It's way too short and doesn't have the look that I want.  After deciding this, I realized that this was going to turn into a ground up build and would need some extra help.
I took the motor out of the frame and put everything into the back of my car and took it to my buddies Danny and Mike's garage.

Let the welding begin:

Mike and Danny have been a HUGE help, taking this project a few steps above what I was expecting to do.

New Battery Tray

Tank and Seat Mount

We relocated the front tank tabs to bring the tank forward a bit.  It was a small adjustment that took too much time, but was worth it in the end, even more a small difference.

Seat Spring Tabs

Quick Mock-Up

I made up a side Mount Lic. Plate / tail light bracket it.  Weded directly to the frame.

Redid the front brake pedal to match the offroad look of the pegs.  Turned out cool I think.

Had to shave down the cable holder on the rear drum to make clearance for the rod I'm gonna run instead.  Need to clean up the hub a bit more.

Mike made up a great Ignition switch holder that tucks right up under the frame.  Turned out great.

Seat in place

Danny threw down some crazy speed holes on my front sprocket cover.

Another Mockup

This is about as complete as the bike is at the moment.

Still working out some small details, but hopefully it'll be on the road soon.

Stripped the frame down to nothing, cleaned it up, and rattled canned the crap out of it, plus a few other parts.

Recently I've been tossing up a few ideas about the paint on the tank.  I know I want to keep the stock Topaz Orange (or as close as possible).  The orange is going to have a deep metal flake paint job.  I'm still working on the details of the graphics.

I photoshoped a few options.

Stock:

Photoshop'd

After discussing it with some friends, I think I'm running with this:

This weekend we're gonna reassemble what we can and start running the wires.  If that goes well, we may go as far as throwing the spare tank on and seeing if this little sucker will fire up.  I really hope she will.

Once the tank, fender, and headlight or back from paint, this little scoots ready for final assembly.  I think I've made a lot of good progress over this winter, and did it pretty cheap.  I did have a LOT of help from really good friends...for that, I'm very thankful.

If you want to view the whole project build thread, you can check it out here at my forum: http://www.halffastchicago.com/forum/index.php?topic=173.0 .

Even though this project is almost complete, I'm still completely open to anybody's comments, feedback or suggestions.

Thanks.

Pretty cool old school project.

We have the remnants of a sl 350 chopper/bobber my dad built in the late 70's. It's built  from a sl 350 he bought new and totaled shortly after getting it, it's candy apple green.

Have you give any thought to a old school sissy bar?

be watchin for more

i'm usually not into hardtail bobbers made from old metric bikes but I really like what you're doing with this. With that metalflake orange it's gonna be sweeeet.

Obviously a lot of thought and work has gone into this build.
Well done.

Thanks for the compliments.  It has been a struggle getting the bike to where it is now.  Luckily the weather is #$%*ty here, so it allows enough time to get things done.  There were a few road bumps, and I have a couple I currently have to deal with, but they're small, so they shouldn't be that big of a deal.

I though about running a sissy bar for about a day, then decided against it.  There's nothing on this bike that isn't necessary.  No accessories, no frills, smallest tail light I could find etc.  The only reason it has a rear fender is because it has the knobbiest tire I could find for the rear and I don't want to burn a second hole into my butt.

This bike has been a blast to build, and definitely a learning experience.  I'm really happy with the outcome.  The bike is a bit too small for me, but it's gonna be a bar hopper so it shouldn't be a problem and I'm gonna rock it as hard as I can.

My next post should be of the final assembly.  Hopefully it is soon.

Can't wait....

With the knobbys on the Road, you don't need a fender to protect your bung hole, it will be puckered so tight it'll wear the tire to a slick if they rub ;D

Dang you just destroyed a very collectable SL350, I doubt there is a stock one in the whole of Australasia!
But they do make great choppers, my mate chopped one back in the 70's when they were new, was the meanest looking ride around.
Like the way this build is going, gotta see the end product. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Where did you get the hardtail? Is that a bolt on Harley hardtail that you welded in or is it one of those made for an XS650 or CB750?

Great looking build.  I love the fact that you even relocated the gas tank pegs!  I'm looking forward to the finished pics so keep us posted! :D

I agree with your choice on the tank paint scheme. the black with Honda logo is sweet!

cool looking bike you guys are doing a good job. did you set yourself a cash limit. and what kind of hardtail section are you using. my son and i are building 71 cb350 bobber now we gave ourselves a $700.00 limit. it seems to be real easy to do when you do the work yourself. hope you post more pics

Originally I did have a price limit...as cheap as humanly possible, but now that it's coming to an end, I'm just throwing money at it to get it done.   All in all it hasn't really cost that much, it's just the small stuff that adds up real quick.  All in all once paint is done, I'd say I have about $900 into this project, maybe a tad more.

The hardtail is a bolt on for a triumph,  but obviously it wasn't a direct bolt on for this application so we had to chop a lot to get it to fit right.  The hard tail cost me about $160 on ebay, which is a bad price, but not an expense I was expecting at the time.  It has been worth every penny because it has completed the look I was originally wanting with this project.

I love the paint idea with the Honda "wing" logo in the black stripes.  Mind explaining to a complete noob, the process one would go through to get those graphics?  Do you have someone cut decals or would you paint that?  If pain, how?

Originally, the guy who's painting the tank was going to cut out the logo himself by hand, but I guess it was a little harder than he thought, so I believe he had someone else cut out the graphic on to vinyl and used that as a stencil.

I've only got a cell phone pic of the turn out, but it looks great.  I'll have the Tank, Fender, and Headlight bucket finished very soon.  I'll post pictures soon.

Yeah, DarkBane is a Rebel, what of it?  He lays his Freshly painted tank precariously on a piece of wood hovering over a metal file with a container of Mineral spirits right behind it.  He lives life in the fast lane and doesn't take no for an answer!

Amazing paint db!  just amazing!

Haven't kept this thread up to date as much as I would have like, so here's a small update.

She's about 95% complete.  I've been blasting her all around Chicago for over a month now and she's running great.  She can be a #$%* sometimes, but soon I'll figure out the sweets spots on her tuning.

Here's a picture of her current state.

I still need to finalize the exhaust, wrap the seat pan, and get the painted rear fender mounted.  Other than that, she's good to go for the summer.

If you're in the Chicago area, you can't miss me blasting down the streets.  Western Ave, Ashland Ave and everything in between is my main stomping ground, but I like to venture out into all parts of the city over the summer.

Love it!  I really like the way those nobbies look.  Are you going to add the rear fender like you had in some of your mockup pics?  Seems like it needs a splash of color in the rear.

Thanks for all the compliments.  I'm glad it can be an inspiration to some.  I'm 100% happy with the way it turned out, and yes, I do get Thumbs Up from Harley guys when I blast by them.   I was never a bobber fan before (more of a cafe' guy) but this project sparked my interest and I'd love to do more.

As far as the honda graphic on the tank.  I just used this graphic:

and told my buddy who painted it to lay down all the metal flake orange and then cut this logo out of the black stripe so that the logo would be the metal flake.  I photoshopped it first to see how I like it:

and I loved it, and so did everybody else.

I do have a rear fender that my buddy is painting for me.  It'll be the same color scheme with the orange and he'll tie in the black stripe somewhere on it.  It does need the extra color in back, so I can't wait to see it when it's finished.
