Front brakes, or at least what I call front brakes
« on: March 27, 2009, 12:36:00 PM »
It took my back brakes going out today due to the new rearset linkage not being totally set up yet to find out...I really don't have front brakes, surprise!

The front brakes barely do anything so now I'm wondering if I did something really, really wrong.  I have the caliper apart right now and just a couple of questions.

1) The piston has a concave part.  I attached the puck to the concave side of the piston and inserted the piston with the puck facing out...wrong?

2) There is an inlet and outlet to the caliper itself.  I had the fluid supply hooked up to the rear, which has a smaller orifice.  The bleed is to the front.

Anything glaringly wrong?  The brake feel was very tight, you can't even get near getting the control squeezed all the way to the handlebar.

Thanks.

So just to complete this discussion...I redid my brakes completely.

-Old, non drilled rotor (I don't think this made a big effect, I'll put back the cross drilled when I get a chance.
-Brake pads were not plumb, I ground them even.  I think this may have had a big effect.
-The biggest improvement was a direct, new braided line from MC to Caliper.  The feel on the lever is much better now but the best part is how easy to bleed the system is.  Just tug the line this way and that to release the bubbles.  I did all the bleeding from the MC.
-The MC had an integral brake switch so I just jump wired the brake lights to that, getting rid of the over engineered junction block.

The brakes feel much better but still not nearly what my other bikes feel like but I think what it is is what it is until I'm ready to pony up for a complete system upgrade to modern brakes from a later bike.

It's not even in the planning stages yet but maybe Buell or something.  I figure I'd have to lace up a modern hub and brake rotors to my wheel and then fit the master cylinder, can't be too hard but I don't know until I try.
