I need some opinions....
« on: March 27, 2009, 07:21:17 PM »
I received this cylinder today from eBay. The way you see it is the way it was sitting on my doorstep. The seller is adamant it was well packaged. Christ...the locating dowel punched a hole through 2 pieces of cardboard. The box is soft as a grape and you can see where the mail service put Priority tape on a corner to keep it from exploding. It didn't help much.
The seller says he has another cylinder he can send me. I said no interested as it will shipped in the same manner. I want my money back.
A buddy of mine bought a set of VW rods off a guy in Puerto Rico a couple of years back. The idiot puts 4 rods in a box with NO PACKING and sends them to Massachusetts. Geez.....can you guess what they looked like when they arrived?? ::) My friend tears the guy a new one on the board he found them on and the seller had the balls to threaten him with all sorts of stupid retaliatory crap. Some people are so stupid and/or just aholes. ::) ::)

Oh yeah....he's blaming the US Mail service on being "Ham Fisted". I'm sure they will accuse him of being "Retarded". ;)

I think I would return that even if it meant losing the shipping both ways

No excuse....   money back for sure.  If not, then post the seller ID so that I don't waste any business on him.

I wonder how often this happens. Likely the seller moves a lot of stuff and just rushes the packaging.

Tis a shame. What a waste.

I hope fish took a pic of the carbs i sent him..

I pack as if it will be dropped and it will.. it always takes WAY  too long but I am happy when the buyer appreciates it.

Pack it like you would like to get it.

A few years back I got a rt side switch  housing and wires for 750.. guy threw it in a priority bag with nothing around it to ship to Canada.. it was ripped up a bit when it got here. I complained and he said you are lucky you got it so cheap, think it was 15 bux, and probly same to ship. I told him , i could not even tell if the kill switch was black or red in the pic, and you wonder why you dont get bids.. i think on the feedback I said worst packing I have seen..

Sellers that cant be bothered to pack right are a pita.. put his name on the bad folks.. list..

The biggest thing when shipping stuff like this is that there needs to be no room for the stuff to move around.  It's the weight of the item shifting in the box itself that causes this.  What was once a sturdy box becomes 'soft as a grape' when a 30 lb item with sharp edges is bounced around inside it about 100 times.

I had somebody send me axle half\shafts. By the time it got to me one of them was completely out of the box!!!

Good luck getting your money back...

In a past life I was a shipper, we moved lots of pricey stuff.  When I sent my swingarm out it got bubblewraped and double boxed with more bubblewrap, I guess it survived the MA to CO run with the fedex boys... double box is the key.

Sorry to hear it Mike, what a waste of a perfectly good part too.

I think it's the "waste" part that really gets to me Brent. A perfectly good cylinder completely ruined secondary to ineptness.  ::)

There shouldn't be a problem getting your money back for Paypal for product like that.
They are pretty good about protecting the purchaser over the seller.

So what are you looking for opinions on?

You paid for the merchandise, and it arrived to you damaged.  It doesn't matter whether it was damaged before or during shipment, it's the seller's responsibility to deliver the item to you in the condition it was stated at the time of sale.  Even if there's a shipping insurance claim involved, it's there to protect the seller, not the buyer.  You have the right to a full refund.  If the transaction was done through paypal, then you will get the total, including shipping, refunded to you.  Unfortunately, unless the seller decides to pay for return shipment on his own, you will be stuck with that cost, but maybe the possibility of getting a negative feedback for this will motivate him to be as accommodating as possible.

I worked at UPS for thirty years and saw alot of "JARHEADED" packaging! The shipper should have used a NEW box and lots of support to protect the fins. Last summer, I shipped a NOS Okrasa kit for the old 36hp VW engine. I shipped it with a bunch of heavy cylinders and engine case to FRANCE! The parts were NON replaceable vintage hop-up parts that I sold to the guy for $16,700., so I packed them well. I shipped them UPS and they arrived in FRANCE unscathed!
