89 Suzuki RM 250 Clutch questions..
« on: March 27, 2009, 04:45:23 PM »
This isnt my bike its a friend of mine that owns it and he asked me some questions. Some i could answer some i couldnt answer lol. Anyways I cant seem to locate any specs as to how far the Clutch actuator arm (think thats the right name for it...the one on the motor end of the clutch system) has for free play before it engages the clutch. Right now the arm currently moves around an inch back and forth.

All i cna suggest there is a competion shop as the RM was never a "road" bike
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!

Got a pic?
The movement means nothing without a reference point.
Is cable connected?
Could be worn plates, arm positioned wrong on splines, not adjusted correctly (usual cause) clutch basket loose on shaft, etc, etc.
It may also be the one with a pressure plate adjuster inside the cover (which kinda sucked when you had to drain coolant to adjust clutch  :o) I worked in Suzuki dealers when these were new, just forgot which one it is exactly

The Cable isnt connected. He had to cut it to free the clutch arm due to a siezed cable. From the sounds of it it may be one under an engine cover. I will see if i can get him to send me a pic.

It could be the rack and pinion type, in which case 1" will be normal.
You reposition the lever  on splined shaft to adjust it.
Seen a lot of them broken when cable wasnt removed before atempting to remove cover
