lowering blocks from mc enterprises drop the rear suspension 2" and are easy to put on yourself.

You can also purchase shorter (typically 11") shocks if you want to keep the same suspension geometry in the rear.  For the front, you can push the forks up higher in the triple trees a couple of inches.  Just keep in mind, the lower you go, the harder it will be to get the bike on the center stand, and it won't lean over as far on the stock side stand.

And another option is to cut some foam off the seat.

Go to a low-profile tire........the 500 or 550 shocks........about 1" on the front tubes..........OR......switch to a 17" aluminum rim from a GL or 750A.  The 16" rims have little effect because of the tall tire profiles.  You can take a 1/2" slice out of the center stand and substitute a 550 or 650 sidestand.

Im personaly not a fan of the lowering blocks. What they do is "kick out" the lower portion of the rear shock and makes it a steeper angle. Thus reducing its efficiency. Makeing it a harder ride. Rember that your shocks are probley a good 30 years old and honestly could use a replacement. I myself am going with the 11 inch shorty shocks on my F model.

As far as the front goes theres many diffrent ways to go about this. The cheapest and easyest way is to loosein the trees and push the fork tubes up. Once again not my style either. Im a firm beliver that the people that engenered the bike did know a thing or two on how it should ride. One thing you could do it dissasemble the front forks and cut off the the bottom of the tube to lower it. Or you can go out and buy the proper shorter fork tube for the bike. Still keeping it "stock".

Cycle X has a lowering kit. It includes the 11 inch short shocks and the -2 inch fork tubes. Its the proper way to go about lowering your bike. There selling it for $200.

Most people get buy with just droping the rear of it.

Pushing the forks up in the trees and physically shortening the forks both alter the stock geometry in exactly the same way.  The benefit of keeping the stock-length forks is that you retain the stock suspension travel, and you don't have to deal with finding exactly the right length/rate springs to replace the existing springs with.  Using the stock springs with shorter forks results in excess pre-load.  Cutting the stock springs shorter results in increased spring rate.

When lowering the bike, pushing the forks up in the trees will keep a closer to stock ride geometry than lowering the rear alone.
