Can of worms?
« on: March 28, 2009, 06:12:28 PM »
Hello all, just started a tear down on my 550K and she is not lookin all that happy. Not sure if I need to to a full rebuild, or if finding another motor is going to be the more cost effective way to go.

buying a going engine is cheaper, if that engine has no issues.
pull your motor apart and have a good look at everything then decide

There is the progress as of now, I am new to SOHC4 motors and not really sure how to get the case open. But I am pretty sure it is straight forward

your starting out good...lot's of pictures....we love pictures here.... :P :P :P :P :P :P :P

the rust seems worse then it is.....the rods will clean up nicely, that one cylinder you might have to see if it pitted the cylinder wall from the rust, but a quick honing might make things alot brighter.....
but even then,an over bore will solve that,no problem.......but it will add $$$$ to the rebuild of course....
Marti, I want you to know, I like you an awful lot, but guys have said far less and left wearing their drinks on their shirts.

I've seen worse (see my avatar).

I don't like the look of your cam, though.

How many miles on that engine?

It doesn't look like a low miles engine judging by the wear on the cam.

the cam is the bigger issue.

Get a micrometer out or a caliper and check if theres any deformation in the lobes.

Check them all. If they are all about the same thickness from top to bottom then the cam isnt so bad. But may still need to be replaced.

If all that checks out, then check for deformation "around" the tip of the lobes. Grooves, wear valleys, etc.

46K? that's not half bad for a 550. Especially one in this condition. Too bad the PO didn't take good storage precautions before you picked it up.

Yea the PO was my dad, he bought it new in 1975 then I got a hold of it, pissed him off and I think he took it out on the bike. Oh well, live and learn.
