Lester front wheel help?
« on: March 29, 2009, 01:10:08 PM »
Hi 750K lester front wheel
Looking at putting double discs on it but they seem to be offset.....that is one disc sits further from the center of the hub than the other. Anyon else find this? Can it be done?

Thanks

Steve

Mine has two washers under each of the bolts on the speedo drive. I was wondering why and if that was to allow for a disc on that side. Dan, could you be more specific about what is required. Mine is also an early fork which does not appear to have an ambidextrous bracket.

Swoop, It is not really THAT much harder than a stock wheel. It was 3 years ago and would be impossible to type out a set of directions. But here is a list:

1. Mount discs on wheel. This requires longer bolts (grade 8) and requires some metal to be machined out of the right side of the wheel for speedo drive clearance. The disc CAN mount flat to the right side of the wheel meaning the width of the wheel does not need to be changed.

2. Build custom mirror image bracket. I started with a left side and cut, welded on billet aluminum, drilled, filed, and fit. I know some people build up washers and such to build the mirror image bracket but I wanted to make one that looked actually like a mirror image. The fitting part took a very long time as you can not pull the wheel without taking off the right side caliper. Must have mounted and dismounted the bracket 30 time to fit the same as the left side. The caliper holder bracket does NOT line up directly over the disk. Had the bracket polished and chromed. I machine out the bracket and hanger pin holes and machine a stainless pin to fit to closer tolerances than stock. Start with a stainless big bolt as stock to machine the new pin.

3. Powder coat calipers and rebuild. Rebuild master cylinder. Install speedbleeders and complete stainless line set. I went through the stock brake light switch.

It actually was a winter project 3 or 4 winters ago and took quite a while as the welding of the bracket I took to a pro and the chrome plating had to be sent out. I work out of town all week but if you are serious I can take a bunch of pictures next weekend and post if you want. I used the stock master cylinder and if you get all the air bled out it works fine. Dan

Its a lot easier on your caliper if the hanger is parallel to the rotor.

On my 73 I left my adjuster springs out, and could pull the tire without removing a caliper, if I let the air out.

Whale man, it sounds like you have a 72 or earlier fork. I think the later ones mount easier. mine is an early and the bracket will require more work like yours. thanks for the info.

Yes, 754 is correct the hanger MUST be parrell to the rotor. Yes, it is a 72. Dan

Thanks. Every November it comes in my family room and every Spring it goes back to the garage. For some reason I look forward to a snowy Sunday with a football game on and fooling with my bike. Wife knew this when we got married and is cool with it. Dan
