Scary Thought - GT750 4LS Wheel on a '78 CB750 K8
« on: February 09, 2009, 07:00:45 PM »
Anyone ever heard of a conversion to the GT750 4-shoe drum brake front wheel for any era CB750? I can lay my hands on a complete front end for money similar to what I would need to spend on the '78 K-series to the '78 F-series front brake. I need to pretty much start over on the front end of my bike, the forks are ratty and leaking and the single caliper is done for. Both are 35mm forks but I have no idea at this point regarding clamp width and stem length.

Thoughts for a noob?

Lot of people will pay big bucks for the GT750 front brake for their vintage racebikes. I'd set up discs on the CB, but if you can get the GT750 front end at a good price, get it, and make good money selling it.
No.

I run a GT750 4LS drum on my Triton and love it.  They are heavy, expensive, a #$%* to polish and finicky to set up but stop very well and look great. I got lucky and bought a 72 Water Buffalo for $300, kept the front drum and sold the bike for $300 the following week. 4LS drum routinely sell for $300-350 unrestored on E-bay. New twin brake levers run $100 plus cables.

You may have to machine the brake cover plates, switch bearings, different triple trees, mill spacers and/or change or make an axle to fit your CB750 K8 depending on the width between fork tubes. Off the the top of my head I think the drum is 7 1/4" wide and the GT550 drum is a hair narrower. Some reference material here
http://victorylibrary.com/brit/2LS-2.htm#GT750 or Suzuki GT750 reference http://www.suzukicycles.org/All-Suzuki/all_suzuki_models.html
and try a keyword search on britbike.com

If it was easy everyone would be doing it. My advice is to sell it and run period correct discs on your bike with new stainless steel brake lines. I may be interested if the price is right. Good Luck.

I have a GT750 4ls brake and I'm planning the same mod to my '71 CB750K. I believe someone over at dotheton.com has done something similar.
