Side Covers for 78 CB750 K
« on: March 31, 2009, 01:48:12 PM »
I know, I know, there are plenty of "side cover" topics and I'm sorry that this is another one but I wanted to get some advise before I took the plunge and spent some hard earned $$$ during these tough economic times. I need some side covers that are tough enough not to break like the originals, I'm not a purist but I want to make sure I spend right and I also want to make sure that I can hang on to them.

Looks like there are 3 different places that members have been buying their side covers, but I'm still on the fence...can anyone just drop me a line and give me their experiences on the following:

-Maier / JC Whitney: Repros that you have to drill and they attach to the bike with hardware, PROS-Harder to steal and no real risk of cracking them while pulling on them CONS- Need a screwdriver all the time

-David Spares (UK): Repros that look like the original PROS- Looks like original but with better materials, allows easy access to oil and electrics CONS: Easy to steal and very pricey and currently out of stock.

-LPM - these look great and they've been getting alot but I don't think they make them for K8's - been trying to confirm but emails have not been answered.

Can someone holla at me with their thoughts and experiences?

I have the maier's on my k6.  They're fine... and cheap.

The david silver's and lpm's are the same product (I've read here, anyway)

I may get the lpm's for my k6 as I freshen the bike up (new 341's :))

Great experience with LPM. I've ordered several sets of side covers, including two sets of 77-78K covers.

Excellent product quality and quick turn around -- less than 14 days from order to receipt (from overseas).

Bought Maiers for mine.  Easy enough to install.  Look good.  And, I always keep a screwdriver with me anyway.

Put the badges back on yesterday. but no pics as of yet.  Just drilled to holes in each and put on with new push nuts.

Anyone have a link to LPM?

I had the Maiers on my F1. They were okay. Needed a tiny bit of adjusting to fit right, but I got them on there. I would prefer something else on my K8.

luckydevil do the maiers mark where to drill or did you have to measure them? the pics of the side covers on your scoot look good. Do you hear the side covers "whine" or "squeek" when you put pressure on them with your legs?

where did you order them and how much was the total? how long did it take?

They are not marked.  I held them up to the original location and marked them.  Then drilled with a 3/8 drill bit.  No whine or squeak because I used the stock rubbers to hold the crush nuts that came with the pack.

As far as ordering and price, I have an advantage.  I work at Cycle Gear and got them at employee cost.  (crap, I just became everyone's best friend  ;D )Parts Unlimited has a Wharehouse about 20 miles away and they were in stock there.  Got them the next day.

Retail they are about 38.00 a piece.

I also recommend replacing the rubber grommets holding your side covers.  The old ones dry and harden, and lose their "grip" on the side cover tabs.  If you replace the stock airbox with velocity stacks or pod filters, the increased air flow can blow off your covers, if they are not secure enough.

i currently have the screw on covers w/crush nuts. i ordered new from david silver, and they are perfect, which raises the dilemma. i'm sort of afraid to put them on w/pod filters after the horror stories of loosing one on the road. so, i waited and bought emblems on ebay cheap, and put them on the screw on covers for when i go high speed cruising of any distance. the crush nuts do a number on the grommets tho, chew them up. oh dsilver was $42 plus ship, and came w/in a week. i think i bought the last set for 750 K8 tho, or so the site showed only one set avail at the time w/emblems. i do know what you mean about the side covers being sort of the symbols for your particular model that you are proud of and want them to be just right, like the paint job, and the shiny. the screw on look nice, no paint on them but the plastic shines up with some work. some choices must be made w/the mind, and some with the heart.

You forgot the wallet.  That is ultimately what made my decision for me.

I have been complimented so many times on how nice my bike looks in it's "original" condition.  But, I know that the seat and pipes are not original, so it was no big issue putting on after market side covers.  Still looks good, very functional and easier to remove without breaking them, and the "other" people don't really notice the difference.

I have the same covers and the PO grinded down the tabs on the back of my emblems and he had them stuck on the covers with 3M moulding tape. I went 6000km last summer and those emblems never moved. When I repainted the bike this winter they were a bytch to get off...they ain't coming off going at 100mph that's for sure...may be a cat 5 hurricane ;D ;D and if that happens the emblems are the least of my worries :D :D :D

hey lukcydevil...im converting my bike into a cafe and have some cherry parts that might fit well on your scoot. I've got a super clean gas tank, stock seat and i was thinking of putting some wrapped drag pipes so I still have the stock pipes..no rust.

PM me if your interested.

Sorry it took so long to respond, did not see your post originally.

Yes they are mac 4 - 2.  They are lip ons.  Do not know if the headers are original or not though.
