Left the carb in the Dip for to long
« on: March 16, 2009, 04:45:03 PM »
1)         I forgot about 1 of my carb bodies in the carb dip and i think i ruined it, set off 77 550 . The jets and stuff dont fit in tight any more, they just fall out.
I have a set from 78 550 for parts. My question is.... the 78 has the rubber tubes running between each carb as well as a different float level setting. Aside from that they look the same. Can i just cap off that one hole and set the floats at the 77 setting and use it to replace mt 77 carb body?

here are the specs for referance: http://www.motorcycleproject.com/motorcycle/text/specs.html

2)Or if any body has a spare set they are willing to part with.

Did the dip eat the aluminum, or did you leave the old jets in it as well?   If you left the old jets in it, it probably just ate the rubber o-rings off, now they fall out.   But if the screw-in slow jet won't hold, then I think it's probably cashed.

As far as switching them, I'm not sure.   I would think it could work in theory, but even if you vac-synched them, if it has a different slow jet but same float level, you would have different mixture making the cylinder work different from the rest.   I think the float level is set to match the slow jet (as well as other things), so you would have to make it a 38 jet and not a 42 jet if you matched the float level to your other carbs.

Out of curiosity, let us know what 'dip' you're using and how long they were in there.

I have an extra carb that I could send your way.  If you are interested, drop me a pm.

'77 and '78 carbs should be the same. '76 and earlier were different from the '77 and '78 carbs as far as I know. Should have PD carbs on both bikes.

That's what I was thinking. I know that's the case with 750s anyway...

the 46A (77) has no rubber lines between each carb but The pd46c (78) does. The posted pic is of The 78 carb set i have that i bought as parts, yo can see the black rubber line. Sauce i will pm you. The dip i think actually ate the aluminum. I swapped all the jets andjust capped off the unused lines. Havent adjusted the floats yet well see what happens. The carb dip was berrymans. Works well but dont leave stuff in for to long. I want to say i left it in there for a day. Other then that i have had no problems with it.
