noob alert.... I need the steps

Hello..... I need a bit of help...I've reassembled my carbs on a 71 cb500... ready to measure the floats and finish off the bottom end of the assembly..and know ( from reading about bench sync'ng) that it should be done..... however, I cannot find a procedure in the service manual or on the forum.... can anyone give me a remedial course in bench sync'ng?  I understand there is a 1/8" drill bit involved....

Synching is pointless unless you ran a full tune-up first. Did you do this?

It is just pre-adjusting all the slides to be at the same distance off the carb bottom. That could be 1/8" and that is where the drill bit comes in as a measuring device. Adjust them all the same and make sure they all start to move at the same time. Sync will be very close. Dan

Smallest drill bit you can find 1/8 is an absolute maximum

I've cleaned and rebuilt the carbs with new gaskets ( everything that was in the carb rebuild kit)...

By "tune-up" he means adjust tappets, clean or replace points, set timing, adjust cam chain, set idle, adjust air/fuel mix etc., not just cleaning and rebuilding the carbs.  You can do a bench sync to get things in the ball park, but wait to do an actual syncing until all of the rest of your tune-ups are done.

If you set to 1/8" make sure the idle adjustment has some push on the system so the slides can be lowered back all the way.Bryanj is correct in that 1/8" is too much if the idle screw is all the way backed off as the idle would be way high. Dan

something i learned at AMI that DOES make a difference. adjust the valves then do a compression check. as long as the pressures are fairly close within 10 pounds or so, you can actually re-adjust the valves either closer or more clearance to get the compression even, makes for an even smoother running more powerful motor.

I have no idea what this means. I am not sure this is correct Fuzzy. Please explain how tighter or looser valve clearances can raise the compression numbers. Dan
