Replacing Oil seals with the cases together
« on: March 31, 2009, 05:57:25 PM »
I was talking to a fellow board member about this already, but I'm stubborn and like second opinions (certainly no disrespect meant in any way, I just like to see what others think).

Can you replace the oil seals (cranshaft seal under the points and the output shaft seal) with the cases together?  If so how do you do it without mashing up the seals?

Thanks for the advice.  I've got my hands full with this bugger!

The crank seal has a raised portion that fits into a groove in the case . I don't think you can get the new one in . But come on . Don't you want to see whats going on inside your cases? ;)

Ohh dear God, I know whats going on inside of those cases, HA!.  I've done pretty much everything but made sweet sweet love to everything in there.  Oye.  I think I'm just going to pop it back apart and slap 'em in.

Ehh I guess that's how it goes.  I felt sad when I closed it up, never again to see the back cut transmission, the new new everything.  Just the super rods sticking out to remind me of the beauty inside.  Welllll, it's time for a reunion.  One last goodbye before I start twisting the wick and making that beast purrrrrr.  Sorry for the sappy jargon, I've had way too much Crystal light tonight.

fwiw... I haven't seen a replacement seal yet that has a rib, pegs or whatever on the o.d.

if you can get the old out without making a mess of the case or shaft, the new seal should go in without issues.

Happy trails.

There is a lip on the crank oil seal that wasnt quite fitting in.  A friend of mine said he got one out and slapped another in without splitting the cases, but it leaked a little.  He slapped some 1194 on it and it was good to go.  I split the cases and had it back together in about an hour (record time for me haha).  It gave me the opportunity to go back and do some things that I decided to skip before.

BTW, Im guessing that the oil seal kits come with two countershaft oil seals.  One for the early engine and one for the later engine.  Is this correct?

Im working on a 77 CB750 F and Im assuming that the countershaft is thicker (by about 2mm) for this year than the previous years with the shorter countershaft.

This is why there are two countershaft oil seals in the oil seal kit.  One for the early engines and one for the later ones.  I thinkkkkkk.  Right? Heh.

I ordered my kit from CycleX.  The seal kit (sudco 504-001) had the earlier one, but they tell you on their site to order the seal for the 77-78 cb750f (OEM Honda 91205-405-005).
