Need Goldwing help?? it's a general bike problem though....
« on: April 02, 2009, 07:08:23 AM »
okay, here's the background. my cousin bought a '78 GL1000. a couple weeks ago. we are putting it back together. carbs were off when we bought it and most of the wiring was in a box. the guy said he had the carbs apart and cleaned them. i pulled a bowl cover off to look and it was almost spotless in there. now it wont start. we have good spark on all four. pretty much eveything is plugged back in i believe. we replaced the tank and we are getting fuel. (even tried spraying carb cleaner in as starter fluid). no fire, not even once. just cranks over. i put timing belts on it, but i doubled checked and they are timed right. anything else that i may have missed? any help is appreciated...

thanks,
kyle

Well.....Goldwings are a different animal than the 750.

I had a 78 GL 1000 which I sold last year.

When you say your getting spark.....are you getting a nice blue spark at the appropriate time?

First thing I would check for is compression.

If everything else is as you say:

timing, spark, fuel, etc.

Compression would be next on my list.

yeah im gonna pull the plugs tonight when i get home and maybe put a little atf down the cylinders to make sure i dont have dry cylinders. it is a good blue spark. timing im not sure on.

and youre right kghost, it is a different animal. had never done timing belts on a bike before... plenty of cars thoughs.

as far as timing, there may be an issue there but if it was off just a little would think it would still fire some or back fire or something...

thanks again

check that your timing is on. Remember that the points operate off the left cam shaft which is driven by the belts.

If you mismatched the plug wires it will never start. 1-4 2-3 if memory serves.

Its easy to do as they are all about the same length.

You have to verify that the spark is occuring while Cranking. The goldwing has a resitor on the coils and is only a true 12 volt coil when your cranking. When its running its less then 12 as it runs thru a resistor.

Next make sure that all the idle jets are clear in the carbs.

Just because they looked clean in the bowls doesn't mean the bodies are clean.

Goldwing carbs are a pain in the ass.

thats one thing i forgot. the plug wires were switched. originally. i went by the local Honda dealer to price some stuff yesterday and they had GL1100. we looked at the plug wires and realized it was backwards from how we had them. swapped them and it didnt make a difference though.... i wish i could leave work and go dick with it...

I'll wait for more info.

But realistically it should fire just by dumping gas down it.

Course theres no telling what the previous owner did...

We had a member one time who had a set of 750 carbs that absolutely would not run.

Turns out the PO had modified the slides so it would run Alcohol.

The slides had been openned up and radiused.

I only saw it after he got on the Cam and showed me the slides and needles.

I sent him 4 new slides and they ran like a top

So who knows.....
