when I brought up practical application verses theory I had never seen that article.

http://blag.xkcd.com/2008/09/09/the-goddamn-airplane-on-the-goddamn-treadmill/comment-page-8/

As a tradesman I look at the practical verse theory, mostly because I have little formal education beyond HS, this is the point I was trying, unsuccessfully, to make

It was fun

I`m at the same level as you in the educational world mate, but looking at this theres definately problems.
But then you brought the "practical verses theory" thing which is something i like.
For example..................
In theory the bumble bee cannot possibly fly, it defies the laws of physics.
But in the practical world they seem to get off the ground fairly well.

the answer is yes, no ifs, ands or buts.
once the thrust provided by the PROPELLER overpowers the very very very minimal friction on the NON DRIVEN wheels below, the plane with start to move forward and thus the wings will begin to provide lift. i don't know why this has to be soo complicated.

Has learned so far that..."complete" gaskets are never complete no matter where you get them, VHT Silver Case Paint is just as durable as painting your motor with chalk and cheap tire irons used with rim protectors are useless on 30 year old tires.

It wasn't, until we started dealing with a conveyor belt that could hit infinite speeds, and whether the bearings were frictionless or not (although, either way, the answer is easy: yes for frictionless, no for non-frictionless.)
No.

Yep, it's room right next to the fellers debating teleological vs. deontological ethics.

In case anyone has missed the article I linked to before, I want to emphasize one thing the article makes clear...

Quote
The airplane/treadmill [...] contains a basic ambiguity, and people resolve it one of a couple different ways. The tricky thing is, each group thinks the other is making a very simple physics mistake. So you get two groups each condescendingly explaining basic physics and math to the other.

The ambiguity lies in the statement
"...the runway will match the speed of the airplane's wheels...."

To understand the ambiguity, I recommend reading
http://blag.xkcd.com/2008/09/09/the-goddamn-airplane-on-the-goddamn-treadmill/comment-page-8/.
It is not a long article, and the author explains it well.

My thoughts exactly.  If you wanted to be silly, you could have easily gone to the SPBT, where, if you can believe it, you are loved even more than the in rest of the forum.

I can't believe people are voting that the airplane won't take off!  Good Lord, this is simple, basic, beginning fluid dynamics people!  How many of you also believe that a heavier object falls faster than a lighter one?  Shall we take a poll on that, too?
