Tire fitment on the front
« on: April 03, 2009, 03:12:25 AM »
I have a '75 750. I am trying to fit a 16'' spoke rim on the front, the tire is a 130. obviously it is a snug fit as is. What are my options? So far I have thought of grinding a bit off the fork lowers but I don't think this will get me the clearance I need. My only other option seems to be widening the triple trees a bit and all that goes with that. Front end swaps are a bit out of the question unless I can still use my cb front hub as I have ordered custom spokes for it. Thanks in advance.

Im digging info up on the gl1000 front end swap, but cant find if the front end is wider or not, anyone know?
If so...
Can I just get the gl1000 triple trees and use my cb forks, lowers, brakes, hub, axle etc...
Or could I get away with the gl1000 triples, forks, lowers, and axle, and use my cb hub and brakes? (upgrading to dual disk later)

The GL front end is wider than the CB front end. You would want the complete front end off a 75-77 GL to keep your stock CB 6 bolt brake disc wheel.
The GL has 37mm fork tubes and the stock 35mm CB fork tubes wont fit the trees (easily).
I dont know if you can fit a 130 on the GL forks, but the GL forks have a lot more space betweeen the tubes than the CB does.
The GL already has dual discs and getting a complete 75-77 GL front end would be the easiest thing to do (triples, tubes, brakes, axle and speedo drive).

Thanks! the cb front end is about an inch shy of working. so I can still use my  cb hub with the gl1000 front end?

You would want the complete front end off a 75-77 GL to keep your stock CB 6 bolt brake disc wheel.

The 78-79 GL went to the later 5 bolt brake discs. The 75-77 GL front end will accept your stock CB 6 bolt brake disc wheel. The discs, axle, calipers and speedo drive is different on the GL so you will also need that. A complete 75-77 GL front end would be the easiest way to do it.

Thanks again. Should I assume the gl1000 and gl1100 are not interchangeable?

A 16" tire on the front will reduce your trail measurement and possibly have a very dangerous affect on handling.  What size tire are you planning to run?  if you're going for the fat/thick front tire look, you may be alright as the circumference of the tire may not be far from stock.  Too little trail will make the bike very twitchy to ride at speed, added trail (like extended forks chopper style) will give you great straight line stability at speed, there's a happy medium in there somewhere that is a good combination of law speed handling and high speed stability.  I should also mention that the size of your rear tire and the length of your rear shocks will also affect your trail measurement.

Do your research before you build a bike that's hard to ride or worse...is dangerous to ride.

 That would be correct.
Your main focus was keeping the CB ( 6 bolt drake discs) wheel/ hub and the 75-77 GL front end would be the easiest way to do it.
Later forks would require modifications of some sort to get them to work with your early wheel/hub.

I have a 78K... 130 does not fit on my stock front end. Even with the fender out.

If you can find a GL1200 (naked) front end, it will bolt on and already has a fat 16" wheel/tire on it.  The faired GL1200 might also work, but I don't know if it will look right.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

I calculate that the difference in tire radius between 100/90-19 and 130/90-16 is only .44 inches lower for the GL1200 tire size.  That should quicken up your steering without compromising low speed stability or handling at speed, that many racers can't be wrong.  Rock On.

Yes the overall size is going to be near that of stock so not much is changing there.
Anyone with a gl1000 front end wanna grab a measurement for me?  ;D
