We've all been there! Think of it like a marathon not a sprint...you need to push past that wall and then the runner's high will kick in!.

I mean how many times do you have to take off your carbs to fix a problem, fix the problem and then, with a magical gift from the ass rape fairy, another problem arises. I REALLY want to set it on fire and run over it with something that will flatten it out to a point where you could never tell what it was, erasing it's existence from the universe for ever.  I'm going to call some equipment rental businesses and see what they have that's big enough to flatten a motorcycle.

LOL...atleast you have a sense of humour about it. Sounds like it is time to put your feet up and have a cold one. Oh and by the way, when it comes to carbs it takes atleast 4-5 times to get them clean.

walk away, maybe leave it for a couple of days, then go back to it, next time you try it may all fall into place  ;) cheers Mick.

Honestly, I thought the hobby I was getting myself into was RIDING a motorcycle that I would have to piddle with here and there as opposed to just working on one that never actually runs. I'm trying to use some sort of internal, emotional alchemy to transmute this frustration into something else. I know what will help. A good meal, the previously mentioned beer and a HUGE left handed cigarette. There's no reason it shouldn't be running. It was the last time it was together even with a leaky boot. The boots are seated correctly. There's gas..........
Thanks for letting me #$%* and not telling me to shut up :)

Let it out! :)

I know exactly how you feel.  With my first sohc4, a '75 400F, I'm fairly certain that I pulled, rebuilt, and re-installed the carbs at least 30 times before I finally got it to run right.

Just think of it as paying your dues.  It seems like a hefty fee, but it's more than worth it in the end!

I think the carbs on the 1st gen 750's are complete pieces of junk.  I too have wasted far too much time trying to clean/tune/balance them.  They are 40 year old technology that really wasn't that great when they first came out, IMO.  Add to that 30 years of grime and wear and its amazing they work at all.  Really, I feel your pain.

Dump them.  I use a bank of CV carbs of a 1985 CB650SC now.  They are amazing compared to the stockers.  No dripping floats, easy to balance, easy to adjust.  I know some guys here love to old school carbs, but I have never looked back since abandoning them.

I am in the same shoes got everything together I just thought you could ride it.  Right!!  Well I've been working out all the bugs for about three weeks and today I just got everything the was I want it.  For today!!  You just need a break.  I've been messing with mine since Sept 08.  But I got everything the way I want it and its pretty much done there were days I wanted to get a match, but  I just took a week off from it.  Now its done and to be honest I am looking for another bike.  DON"T TELL MY WIFE.  I think I spent more time with the bike the last few months I think she is a little jealous!!

pull them out, adjust by millimeters, put them in, ride, pull them out, clean, adjust by aother millimeter, put them in, ride, yada yada...I hate it too.
now that my floats are right and fuel isnt leaking, i come to find out that everything may have been fine the first time and that my Keyster carb bits are $hi#, and the float needles arent sitting right. I've adjusted these d@mn things 5 times in the last 10 days.  I know how you feel.
So, tonite, ill find my original bits, get them all cleaned and polished while tossing back a few tallies, and in the morning, after a good nights sleep, i'll pull them again, and put them back in....again.
I will say, that when this is all done and she's running right...i'm gonna ride the #$%* out of her!  ;)

In my experience, the F models are especially cold blooded.  If you build a fire under them they will run well right before the tanks explodes.  Good luck.

Too true! You have to keep it all in perspective - if you'd bought a British bike you'd be wrestling with Amals  :o

I've found that if you sip on a cool one in the garage while looking at the beast with an open mind it often helps. It also helps if you have something else to ride while working on a solution....

Good luck!

Once you dial it in, (and yes it may be frustrating to get there) it's a reliable machine.  There are few things that have left me as heart broken and frustrated as my 750's.

I can't help but loving them though.

My F was reliable for the 1st year. Damned reliable. That is until I blew it up. I've been a mechanic in training for 33 years. AND I get better every year. Hang in there and learn as you go.

Have the beer first then the left handed Lucky after you're pissed off and back in the house. First hand knowledge of jacking #$%* up.

If it the yellow one in your avatar, you can send it directly yo me with the title, I will sort it out (read pay to have it sorted out) and ride, ride, ride....

I do have a 1970 that I plan on doing everything myself, but not my daily driver....

Good luck, I hear I am in for a visit from that fairy when I disassemble and reassemble my carbs.

That's gorgeous Bender but I think he just wants to vent. ;D
Brother I feel your pain, old Honda carbs.....but get this, when you finally fix them you feel like you have conquered Everest.
Oh yeah and I recommend JD's and coke for working on carbs. :D

check this one out...

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=48900.0

as you have prol seen i have been working on my LED tail light and relays... i got the whole bike harness out and stripped down to the wires, splicing and installing my relays for the coils, headlight (high and low) and horn and stop light... then i got some wire loom thinking i would make the wiring look better than stock.. get everything installed all my electrical tape on the harness and everything.. and wa la .... it blows 15amp fuses everytime i turn the key so i took everything out again and pulled all the tape off and i look at the wire diagram only to find out that i plugged the turn signal flasher in wrong i plugged the black wire (switched 12+) and the Green wire (12-) into the flasher and everytime i turned the key the flasher came on and shorted out :( so here i took the whole thing apart only to find out it was some lame problem :( that is why i DONT drink when i work on my bike cuz i would do more of that stuff!!!! anyways just thought i would make you fell better knowing that your not alone!

77-78s have a different carb from the earlier models. 99% of the problems with these carbs are found in the very small passages of the idle jets. they are pressed in and if you haven't made absolutely sure that you can see light through them you will continue to struggle. Yes you will become very proficient at diagnosing, removing and repairing your carbs, I have had mine off twice this year alone but I can do it now in about 2hrs including the sync. Don't give up, eventually you will ride something that you can't buy...

I recommend beer, as well.

Hell, my project took 3 years of getting so pissed off i couldn't look at it for awhile.  It COULD have been quicker, but I went into this not knowing ANYTHING about motorcycle mechanics.  Now, I can happily show you what everything in your carbs is and what it does, go through hell with the charging system, etc etc so and so.

Riding?  I'm just now starting riding myself.  A carb synch will do you wonders, but yeah it takes 4-5 times of cleaning (if your tank isn't sabotaging you) and run a little seafoam in your gas.

As for my carbs I have a niggling little leak that I'll button up when I tear into my carbs the next time, but until then, it stays with a little bit of wadded cloth, cuz it's a real slow leak.
