I've got an 81 CB650 with a pretty gooey front end. I've replaced the seals and done new oil but it's still scary smacking the brakes and having the front end just drop. Has anyone tried the PVC shim thing and if so how does that work? I'm loathe to buy a new set of springs as the bikes a bit of a beater and keeping making me spend money.

Could I add a little more oil and stiffen things up? I've already put 20psi of air in the forks to try to help, don't want to go much more than that lest I blow the seals out.

Well isn't that con veeenient?  (church Lady)
A plastic baby bottle is marked off in cc s for any one who cares.

I have been pondering which measuring cup I was going make a "garage tool" but the baby bottle is a great idea... I hope I still have one around.  My wife wanted to keep our last one on a baby bottle longer than I did, so I remember collecting them all up and hiding them...  crap, where are they.

BTW - slight hijack here.  I used Zinsser Magic Strip Citrus-Action to get the varnish off the lowers last night - it worked very well and pretty quick (I left it on for a couple hours - it is a gel).

I've done some polishing and I love how they're coming out.  They were really awful looking before - I really wish I had taken before pictures.

Sweep - what color is that?  In the pic it looks darker than the candy antares red?!

I like to use the fork oil level method, measured from the top and fork compressed.  I like them to have equal oil levels and I stroke the forks a few times to fill the damper.  It is important to check that the damper is covered in oil.  Sometimes the amount said in manuals can be incorrect.  BTW I use 15wt fork oil in my 77 CB550 at 230 mm oil level which works for me.  My 76 CB550 has 20wt fork oil at 230 mm oil level.  Have not tested that yet.  The 76 has 77 fork tubes with 76 fork lowers that will be a cafe racer sometime next year.

sorry to dig up and old bone here with this thread but it seemed like a good place to start for my question.

MCRIDER mentions the emulators, which i have installed.  my fork has always felt a little bouncy, particularly in a hard corner.  i started with progressive springs and then removed them when i installed the cartridge emulators, as they recommend.

i use 15w bel ray fork oil and added the 6? recomended.

what if anything should i change about my setup with the emulators and what is anyone's experience with cartridge emulator pre-load?

thanks.
