Tank Vent
« on: April 03, 2009, 08:20:23 PM »
I am all done with my project.  Just working out a few details.  I put a sportster tank on the 750 did the petcock, fuel lines and there is a vent to the tank.  I have heard that the old tank was vented through the gas cap.  Do I need to run a vent on this new tank.  What is the reason?  I have had it running a few times and didn't have any problems, but it does start hard after sitting for awhile.  But its new to me don't know the whole choke to temp setup every bike is different in my opinion.

You need a vented cap to allow air to enter the tank as fuel exits.  The vent on the stock cap will often plug up with corrosion and cause a stalling problem after a few miles, similar to the sputter you'd get when it's time to switch to reserve on your petcock.  It's an easy problem to troubleshoot, just open the cap when it starts to sputter...if the sputtering disappears, you've got a venting issue.  I don't know a thing about sportster tanks or how they're vented, but I'll bet someone here does.
Sounds like a cool project, are there pics up someplace?  (other than your avitar?)
Good luck working out those details too!

I do have a place to put the vent line it runs to the top of the tank and then down the side, and out the bottom. I will put the line on there tomorrow and see if there is any difference in how it runs. Here are pics.

That's a nice build Wireman!  Real clean, and all business.  Is that engine far from stock?  Is that a stock front end, I can't tell from the pics.  Have you been working on that one long?

I started on it in Sept 08. The tail end is a rigid swing arm trom TC BROS CHOPPERS.  it was a bolt on tho the old swing arm and then weld to the top were battery sat.  The engine is stock it ran when I bought it. The front end is all stock.  Did replace with All Balls bearings.  I wasn't going to try and get all those balls back in place!  The rest of the stuff I fould on ebay, Cycle X, trader, or from Pauls Cycle here in Marshall.  He was a big help.  When I went in there and told him what I was doing he smiled and said he used to race a 750 and knew all about them he even had a bunch of parts that have been sitting on his shelf for years and he gave me some pretty good deals.  He is a pic of the day I first ficked it up.
