Lower case removal instructions
« on: March 30, 2009, 02:44:50 PM »
Does anyone have a step by step of removing only the lower case on a 750K8? I'm not removing the upper case. Doesn't have to be too detailed, but I'd like to know the order. I need to know things like, "You need to take the shifter shaft out before anything else", etc... Also anything to look out for in disassembly, re-assembly. I'm a complete noob. :)

Thanks.

That is very useful. Thank you.

This looks like a lot though. Not sure about pulling the alternator rotor.  ???

But at least that turns up a couple hits on this forum.

I've removed all the bolts holding the cases together.

I'm pretty sure I don't need to remove the alternator.
I'm pretty sure I don't need to remove anything under the points cover.
I'm pretty sure I don't need to remove anything under the clutch basket cover.
I don't think I need to remove the starter

But I'm not sure if I have to remove anything under the gearshift cover.

Whatever the case, my cases aren't splitting. What could I be missing?

I'm only looking to remove the lower case from the upper.

You have to remove the shift selector and bearing holder that spans the case split.

There are also a few bolts in the top case that have to come out.
Alternator rotor can stay on.
Points plate comes off.
I used my factory manual for a guide when split my cases last year.

Excellent, thank you. I'll pull those pieces out next opportunity. I've done the rest, including all the bolts on the upper and lower cases.

How the hell do I take off these screws? What are they torqued at? I may need my impact wrench on these mofos. :P All 4 of them don't want to come out.

I guess I have to go out and get that impact driver finally.

I bought an impact driver, and started whacking at these bearing holder cover screws. They're still not coming out, and I've managed to strip one of them real good too. Any suggestions?

It's a 6mm screw and yes the impact driver is a necessity.

I drilled the heads off all of them, and then the stubs spun out by hand. ??? What was holding these things in so well?

The cover is off now, and I'm going to try separating the cases. So far it doesn't look like it wants to come apart still.

Dunno , but the countersunk screws have a little more surface area than a bolt or pan screw. Knock on wood, I've never stripped one out with the impact driver. Just dont know what's gonna happen when you try to turn something that hasnt been turned in a loooooong time.
Dont lose the little oring from under the holder.

I gave it a rap with a rubber mallet.
There are three dowels aligning the cases.
Did you find the bolt under the chrome starter cover?

The one that's in the hole for one of the screws? I have no idea how I'm going to put the gear shift mechanism back together. There's a million spacers, and little rod thingies (technical term). I hope I didn't lose any of them.

I've been hitting it with a rubber mallet all around. It's still not coming apart. I did get the bolt under the starter cover.

Assuming the PO had these cases apart and put it back together with super glue, what can I do from here?

Woot! Cases are apart. I had to take off the points plate. There's a screw mounting it to the lower case.

So for posterity's sake, I had to remove the bearing holder cover, and the points plate.

I'm going to continue this in my earlier thread where I mentioned my problem with damaged cases.
