intro and question
« on: April 05, 2009, 05:42:14 PM »
hello all -

i just came into a 1976 Honda CB400F SuperSport. My uncle passed and left me a couple bikes, this being one of them. I don't know much about vintage bikes, but I'd like to and I figure this is a good place to start.

the bike runs pretty well, considering. he rode it fairly regularly up until he died (was hit by a truck on his 1974 BMW R90/6), but i'm pretty certain that it has some serious issues. looks like the master cylinder needs a rebuild, along with the front forks - as both are leaking fluid.

something sounds off in the way the overall engine sounds ... it's like something metallic is banging around. i've posted a video, and i know its probably impossible to give any kind of diagnosis, but i was hoping someone could take a shot. any ideas of how i should proceed first would be most helpful, thanks.

Condolenses on the loss of your uncle.

I'd start with getting a manual (might be a downloadable copy in the FAQ section) and give 'er a good tune (tappet adjustment, point gap, timing, cam chain tension).  Then do (or have done) a carb sync.  If the engine is tuned, cam chain properly tensioned and the carbs are well synced AND the noise is still there, then you may have an issue.

Welcome to the forum by the way!
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

+1 on carb synch., also check timing....make sure point 1+4 and 2+3 are both  timed at the same setting, i.e. exactly at the 'F' mark....or pistons will 'fight' with each other and produce a vibration, even a rattle at idle.....you could honor your uncle's memory by taking care of his bikes, I think that is what you have planned...good luck and stay here, don't move that dial !!
If your sure it's a carb problem; it's ignition,
If your sure it's an ignition problem; it's carbs....

I really appreciate the advice, spanner and oldschool, and will definitely start giving the timing and carbs a look. And yes, I do feel a bit of a responsibility to take care of his bikes... I think it was a pretty fantastic gift for him to give me the opportunity. I'll definitely be around! Thanks...

That bike sounds fine - idling well..

Give it a good general tune up, see if this improves its running, apart from that keep up the maintenance.

good luck with it, and welcome to the forum.  :)
