Did I ruin my motor?
« on: April 05, 2009, 02:48:37 PM »
So I went out for a ride today with a friend on my 77 550f.  At one point I was passing a car, and I missed the up-shift and ended up reving the piss out of motor for a few seconds (i think it was at like 11k on the tach).  Anyways, I noticed the exhaust tone changed, and it basically sounded like I was running an open header.  I pulled over to check it out, and noticed the resonator thing inside my kerker exhaust had come off, and the padding that was also inside the muffler was nowhere to be found.  I guess it all just shot out from the exhaust gases at that engine speed?  The bike still runs, but a little strange- it doesn't pull as much, and things just seem a little "off."  Now I'm wondering if this could just be the fact that I lost backpressure from the exhaust, and the air/fuel mixture in the carbs is funky now?  Or does it sound like I bent a valve or something from contact with a piston from over-reving the bike?

thanks

Are there any internal noises like clunking or rattling?  I hope the best for you bike.

I wouldn't think it would damage anything repack it and get a new cap.

The easy way to determine that would be to do what WFO says.

The lose in performance is secondary to exhaust problem. Your gas milage goes out the window too. Repack it and replace the end cap. You may need to replace the baffle too.

I remember on my old XR having to repack the supertrapp it all the time and the lose of back pressure never hurt anything when the packing got blown out.

There doesn't seem to be any abnormal noises from the engine itself- only the different exhaust tone (or lack thereof).  I am planning to repack the muffler and fix the resonator and see if that doesn't clear things up, but I am mainly just trying to ensure I didn't hurt anything inside the motor.  I would assume the bike would be running pretty bad if I had bent valves, but I'm not entirely sure.

I don't think you have done any damage.

You might want to check your valve clearance adjusters.  Over-revving can sometimes loosen up a lock nut or two.

+1. Other than that, if it's still running you're probably fine.
