early petcock
« on: April 16, 2009, 11:54:56 AM »
I am reviving a rusty tank,  750 ('71 I think) and do these early petcocks have two fuel hoses out the bottom?   There was one fuel line connection and one hole where I think another hose connection should be. It isn't like my later bike and my manuals do not show anything.
Over time, It did not leak out any of the 30 yr old gas, but when I cleaned up everything, new gas leaks.

Yes, there are two fuel outlets from the petcock. Each connects to a nipple between the two sets of carbs. One feeds #1 and #2 and the other feeds #3 and #4.

thanks, I was afraid of that.
Instead of searching for the piece that secures the second hose, could I plug the hole, and would the other hole be large enough to supply the 4 carbs?

Hmm, not sure about the one outlet passing sufficient fuel for all four carbs. ???

I do not know the diameter of your hose, but you could use (try)  a 'T' connector for the hose if you do not go with the
stock petcock.

There you go. Cheaper than a new petcock. ;)

Texaninseattle replaced one of the hose barbs on his petcock

As did Papp101, who also replaced the standpipe

On the 2 spigot tap, isn't one the main feed and one reserve? Meaning both are never used at the same time? I may be wrong there.

So when they went to one spigot, no difference in net flow?

After all the one spigot tap is a stock item on later bikes, so it must flow OK.

Both flow fuel at the same time in ON and RES positions with the petcock I just purchased for my '75.

IH is correct. Fuel is fed through both whether the petcock is in run or res. position. Reserve is handled by the standpipe that goes up into the tank. Normal run has fuel entering the petcock through the standpipe (come to think about it, a pretty slender pipe at that). In reserve position, the fuel enters the petcock at the bottom of the tank where the petcock mounts.

Well...there...you...go...  ;)  Working from memory always a dangerous thing.

Still the one spigot is a stock unit. So it must be OK as well.

I'd been reading about Pingel taps and they like to market higher flows. Mostly for harleys I think.

I'll just bow out and maybe learn something.  :)

Theres a post in the Thoughts of Hondaman FAQ that talks about why one spigot tends to feed more than the other on these petcocks.

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=7401.msg108758#msg108758

As to flow, as you say later petcocks had only one spigot so that tells us that a single 5.5mm hose under gravity feed is capable of flowing enough fuel for these bikes.  That said, replacing the spigot looks like it'd take just a couple of dollars in parts and a little bit of time, seems like the way to go to me.
