Don Dirt Paint Candy Gold Question
« on: April 17, 2009, 05:34:31 AM »
I have the Candy Gold paint kit from www.vintagehondapaint.com

As I was flipping around old posts here looking for painting tips etc... I came
across several references of the Candy Gold being a Silver colored base
with a yellow/gold candy kandy tint over it.

Yet, looking at the bottles in the kit I got, the bottles labeled BASE have a gold colored
paint in one and clear agent in the other. The bottles labeled KANDY have two clear bottles
and one molasses colored tint.

My guess is Don Dirtbiker found a better mix for the same end result which is why it is a gold
base and not the silver base I read about here? I just want to confirm these bottles were not
labeled wrong??

So, for those who have painted Candy Gold with Don's kits... was the base gold??

Dunno I've never used one of his kits....

My original gold tank has a silver metallic base.

People who have used his kits seem satisfied.

Never heard anyone unhappy with them....

I have no knowledge of Don's kits or how they are put together. I have only heard good things about them.

my expirence with candy paints (which is very limited) is that certain colors fade faster
than others. Golds and oranges seem to fade the fastest with red a close third. Basically the lighter the color the faster it fades. Also the base color contributes to how fast it fades and a highly reflective lighter color will cause it to fade faster. I don't know why don's mix is different from the factory, but this is as good as guess as any.

Same here... everyone seems tickled with the kits, so that part doesn't concern me.
But I know simple mistakes happen sometimes and the base being gold when all else
I read says silver worries me a bit. Hopefully I'll get an answer before I start shooting.. ;)

when I do airbrush with candy I usually have to use two line driers in the airhose and mist it on in several layers 45 min apart to keep it from appearing muddy. It could be any number of things making the candy look cloudy but the biggest one is always moisture.

I got a reply from Don and the gold base is correct. I have two line driers already and plan to follow Dons instructions to the letter... Thanks for the replies. Here I go Film at 11:00... Maybe. ;)

I meant it looks cloudy in the BOTTLE.

The Original Honda paint was a Silver base but of the paints used now some need a gold base. Don has done all the sorting out so I would go with him
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Got the paint sprayed on. Don did a great job with the colors I think. Our painting
skills could use some work, but the paints were awesome! You can see the results so far
