Why will older 750 fork boots not work on a '78?
« on: April 05, 2009, 08:24:43 AM »
Is it the ears? Cause I'm not keepin' 'em anyway. Just trying to save myself $20 if I don't need to spend it.

77s and 78s don't have fork boots, so, it seems that you will save money on fork boots :)

Correct as there is nothing to fasten them to at the top without the earlier ears

The cycle x boots would work.  they fit over your forks and cinch around the fork tube below the triple tree.  I also read on here about someone using Rancho suspension boots, with a little work to make work.

As surprising as it may seem, I'm not really all that interested in keeping my cb 'stock' or 'correct'. I've heard boots are alittle better for keeping dirt and dust out.

I do, however, have tons of stock '78 cb750 parts that I don't need if anyone wants to make an offer...

Daystar makes universal fork boots/gaiters of nice quality. They cinch directly to the fork tube at the top and have vent holes for when compressed. I think they'd generally be used on a dirt bike as they have about 11 inches of travel, but still look and work nicely on the CBs.

No real practical objective reason to think alligator boots are better than dust covers for keeping dirt out. Virtually all modern bikes including off-road bikes use dust covers and there is no epidemic of leaky fork seals or scratched tubes. You'll find some boots, but I think they are more a styling statement at this point. OCICBW

If you like the way they look... go for it.
